This may be the most clever engagement story of all time.
Terry made a very special necklace for his girlfriend Anna to celebrate their first year together. She had no idea just how very special it was, until over a year later.
Terry created the necklace charm from pine, with a spiral shell embedded into the face of it. Anna was thrilled with the gift and wore it every day, never realizing that it held a secret inside of it.
Terry had used his impressive woodworking skills to create a secret compartment to hold an engagement ring.
A year and a half later, the couple went hiking at Smoo Cave in Northern Scotland. “Smoo,” interestingly, means “hiding place” in ancient Norse. Just. Wow.
During their visit, Terry asked if he could borrow the necklace, then broke it open to reveal the ring and proposed to Anna, capturing the moment on film.
While it was a sweet moment, and of course, she said yes, she also commented: “Wait…it’s been in there the entire time? I could have lost it, you f****** idiot!”
She’s not wrong, that was a huge risk!
Terry posted the video to YouTube, including photos of the necklace in various stages as he created it, the photographic evidence that she wore it every day, and the moment he proposed, with some additional pics of what the ring looked like contained within the charm.
He wrote: “For our 1 year Anniversary, I made my girlfriend a necklace, the first one I’d ever made, which she loved and proceeded to wear every day and everywhere we went. A year and a half later we traveled to Smoo cave in Scotland, a place we had talked about since we first met.”
He continued: “We wanted a nice photo in the cave so I setup my camera and tripod on a timer, and rushed in. I had asked a little earlier if I could borrow the necklace for a moment to take a nice photo of it near the cave. I took it from my pocket, kneeled, broke it open and revealed that something was hidden inside the entire time.”
Terry also explained Anna’s funny comment, writing: “When she finally calmed down and it sunk in, ‘wait.. ITS BEEN IN THERE THE ENTIRE TIME!? I COULD HAVE LOST IT YOU F***** IDIOT!’…Haha she was Happy-Angry.”
One commenter on the YouTube video asked: “That’s cool, how did it stay shut the whole time? like what did you have to break to open it up?” The original poster responded: “It had a really small amount of glue holding the 2 parts together, so I loosened it with a knife quickly before we took the picture (which broke the top part off unfortunately…) and then put it in my pocket ready.”
Other people were in love with this amazingly unique idea, with comments like: “Now that was a really creative idea. I wish that I could have seen the look on her face the moment she saw it” and “this is great stuff!”
Still another person noted: “This was damn beautiful. Thank you for sharing!”
