One man’s wedding day will be memorable in more than one way. While Indiana University police officer, John O’ Rourke was in Sanford, Florida to exchange vows with his soon-to-be wife and celebrate one of the best days of his life, he happened to fall into a situation where he was soon deemed a hero. Timing is everything, and O’Rourke was at the right place at the right time when he entered a “Donuts to Go,” on his wedding day.

He had been on a mission to grab a quick breakfast before saying the big “I do,” but just as he was about to place his order he noticed a room full of commotion in the donut shop. Several customers were hovering over a little girl who was in the middle of having a seizure.

O’Rourke immediately jumped into action, rushing to the toddler’s side and directing bystanders to call 911. After he got directions from the 911 operator over the phone, he began performing chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Just as paramedics arrived on the scene, O’Rourke’s work had proven to work and the little girl gained consciousness. Paramedics took over as the girl woke up, but O’Rourke’s heroic moment was not forgotten. Restaurant workers thanked O’Rourke for hs selfless act and gave him a box of donuts on the house.

Of course, the irony of the cop saving a life inside a donut shop did not go unnoticed…

“It had to be a donut shop,” said O’Rourke, who spent a good 20 minutes in the car processing everything, following the incident. “You can’t make this stuff up.”

The story certainly made for some good entertainment during the reception following his wedding ceremony. ┬áSeveral Florida Highway Patrol troopers were in attendance at the wedding and they weren’t the least bit surprised by the incident. Surely the story rippled through the wedding attendants and was the talk of the guests.

“You know John,” one said. “He’s always at the right place at the right (or wrong) time.”

O’Rourke’s heroic act is still going strong and is flooding social media. He is being applauded by folks all around the world and recognized for the moment that he and the little girl’s family will certainly remember forever.

Certain people seem to always be face to face with situations where they have to jump into action, and whether it’s luck or fate, O’Rourke was at the right place at the right time. His police officer instinct kicked into high gear as soon as he knew that someone was struggling. Had he not jumped into action there is no telling what would’ve happened to the girl. Hopefully, her family gave him one heck of a wedding gift, since he essentially saved her life. He could’ve easily placed his order and gone about his business getting ready for his wedding day, but he put the little girl first and pushed his needs aside. This is why police officers are heroes. They make sacrifices like this every day, and they don’t get the recognition they deserve nearly enough.
