When two New York City police officers walked into a Dunkin’ Donuts in Brownsville, New York, they were treated like they didn’t exist. The employees at the combo Dunkin’ Donuts-Baskin Robbins store at the Brooklyn location, ignored and denied service to the police officers, the president of the detectives union declared. As it turned out, the two investigators arrived at the 1993 Atlantic Avenue location eager to refuel with some ice cream. Although the officers were not wearing uniforms, they didn’t have their suit jackets on. That mean the employees could see their badge and holstered guns. And they refused to service the police officers.
Although the police officers waited in line behind a customer already being served, they were still mistreated, the union officials said. Then a man got in line behind the cops and then a woman with two children. It was a busy day at the ice cream shop.
When the first customer was finished, the employee looked through the cops and asked the man behind them, “Can I help you?”
The man said the detectives were ahead of him, but then the Baskin Robbins employee said, “Yeah, I know, but I don’t serve cops.”
The statement hurt the police officers’ feelings. They didn’t respond in anger like they wanted to. Instead, the police officers remained cool and collected.
The employee served the man and then the woman and children.
Ignored the police officers decided to bring their business elsewhere so they went across the street to another Dunkin’ Donuts on Eastern Parkway where they were served with a smile.
“I think it’s disgraceful but I’m really not surprised,” Michael Palladino, president of the Detectives’ Endowment Association said to PIX11 News’ Shirley Chan. “And there’s some shared responsibility here of course there’s some degree of responsibility on the clerk for his ignorance but there’s also some responsibility on the part of elected officials who have encouraged this type of behavior for their constant bashing of police officers and the decriminalization agenda, so although I’m shocked I’m not surprised.”
Mayor Bill de Blasio called the employee’s actions “illegal” and “unacceptable.”
Although angered by the Dunkin’ Donuts employee, de Blasio pointed out that complaints against officers have dropped while he was major, which “tells a hell of a lot more than some jerk at a Dunkin Donuts.”
Meanwhile, a corporate spokesperson forced the store’s owner to apologize to the detectives and meet with them later in the week.
“Dunkin’ Donuts has a long history of supporting local law enforcement and all those who do so much to ensure the safety of our neighborhoods and our country,” Michelle King, the senior director of global public relations at Dunkin’ Donuts, said in a statement. “Our franchisees are committed to serving each and every guest with respect and courtesy.”
Palladino called the for detectives union members and their family to boycott Dunkin’ Donuts. But he ended the boycott after the company apologized.
“I respect the response from headquarters and I think they can use this as a learning process I think from what happened here they should start ordering their franchise to start giving their employees a little sensitivity training and maybe check their politics at the door before they punch into work,” Palladino said. “After all, police officers, they don’t want special treatment. They would like equal treatment.”
