Can You Guess Weight Of Baby That Had Doctors Yelling ‘Oh My Gosh, She’s Huge’

Updated September 13, 2017

The final weeks of pregnancy can be very uncomfortable for an expecting mom. Her back and feet are achy, she gets tired very easily, and her belly swells to an awkward size that turns balancing, sitting, and sleeping into challenging tasks. This was even more so the case for a young mother in Orange City, Florida, who recently gave birth to one of the largest babies her doctor had ever seen. Read on to hear this incredible story of one mom who gave birth to a baby almost twice the size of the national average, and what the parents have to say about it.

Twenty nine year old Chrissy Corbitt was used to having large babies. While the average weight of an American baby is seven and a half pounds at birth, her first three children weighed in at around nine and ten pounds each at the time of birth. Now that Chrissy was pregnant with her fourth child, she fully expected that her newest would be rather large as well.

As Chrissy got closer and closer to her due date, her stomach got exceedingly large. Much larger than in past pregnancies. She wasn’t quite sure if the extra weight belonged to her body, or the baby’s.

“My wife wasn’t getting any bigger, she was the same weight for about a month,” Carleigh’s dad, thirty eight year old Larry Corbitt, said. “But the belly was getting bigger and bigger. It was like she had a huge beach ball and it was getting more and more inflated.”

About one week before her expected due date, Chrissy’s body could no longer hold the growing baby inside and she was prepped for a cesarean section birth one week early. Once the baby was born, it was clear why Chrissy’s belly had grown so large. Her daughter Carleigh was born at thirteen pounds and five ounces.

“When the pediatrician showed her to me across the curtain, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, she’s huge,’” her mom Chrissy told “I couldn’t believe it. It was like I delivered a toddler.”

When the doctors took Carleigh from Chrissy’s belly, she heard the room full of hospital staff cheering, but she wasn’t sure why. Chrissy’s obstetrician told her that Carleigh was the biggest baby they had ever delivered.

Parents Chrissy and Larry are so happy to have Carleigh in the world, and have decided that she will be their last child. “We went out with a bang,” Larry joked. “This is our last kid. My wife had her tubes tied, so this is going to be it for us.”

Now that the family is at home, everyone is getting settled in. But there were some adjustments that the parents had to make bringing home such a large child. Within days Carleigh was wearing size three diapers and they had to buy all new baby clothes for her; clothing that would fit a nine month old. “All the stuff we bought leading up to her being born, we just donated to a local church,” Larry said.

“She’s just a happy baby, she smiles all the time,” Chrissy said. “I can’t get enough of her.”
