If dogs are known for one thing, it is that they’re loving and loyal creatures. They’re not called man’s best friend without good cause. And perhaps no dog embodies unconditional love as well as little Cesur does. This tiny canine who is from Turkey has been leaving his new owner’s home at the same time every day in order to go to a specific destination. And when you see where he is going, your heart will break. The poor little dog lost his best friend and now goes to his gravesite to mourn him daily…
Mehmet Ilhan, 79, was Cesur’s former owner. But when the man became ill, he was taken to a hospital in Bursa, Turkey. Then he passed away and left his beloved friend behind.
Knowing that his father would want his dog to have a losing home, Ilhan’s son, Ali, took Cesur in and gave him the love that the dog required. But Cesur was never the same again.
“Because of my father’s paralysis, they had a different kind of connection,” said Ali. “When my father was in the hospital during his last days, Cesur stopped eating.”
But Cesur’s love for Ilhan was undying. Despite his owner’s death, the dog was unwilling to let him go.
Cesur was thrown into a cycle of grief. And his depth of depression went farther than anyone could have imagined. When Ilhan’s body was retrieved from the hospital and returned home to get prepared for his burial, Cesur remained by his casket the entire time. He would rather be beside Ilhan than eat. He slept within feet of his former master.
And on the day of Ilhan’s funeral procession, little Cesur was there by his side. He walked along as Ali and other men carried Ilhan’s respected corpse to his final resting place.
Then, when Ilhan’s casket was placed down, Cesur rested his head against the ground right next to the coffin during the ceremony. It was a heartwrenching moment for Ali and everyone who knew Cesur and Ilhan.
“Nobody could touch him until my father was taken to the grave and was buried,” said Ali.
After the funeral, Ali took Cesur home. But the dog was despondent. He refuse to move beyond his heartbreak and forget his former owner. Instead, he would sneak out of Ali’s house and then trek to Ilhan’s grave in the cemetery.
During one occasion, Ali watched Cesur sneak out of his home and decided to follow the small dog. He photographed Cesur as he walked through the small Turkish town to the cemetery.
“The people who work in the cemetery say the first thing he does in the morning is visit the grave of my father,” said Ali.
Ali doesn’t know if Cesur will ever stop taking his trips to visit Ilhan. And why should he stop him?
“Cesur has always been a noble animal,” said Ali. “He will live with me from now on.”
