When Ethan Tipper walked to the beach in a lake near Swansea, Australia, his jaw dropped when he saw a sea creature washed ashore.
What appears to be a cross between a crocodile and a dolphin washed ashore on the banks of an Australian lake just days ago…
When Tipper’s photo was shared on social media, it quick went viral amassing more than a few thousand shares.
The prehistoric-looking creature was found near the boats in Lake Macquarie in NSW by Father Ethan Tipper.
Some people believe the image was Photoshopped or captured elsewhere.
When Australian Museum fish collector Mark McGrouther saw the photo of the beast, he told Daily Mail Australia that he suspects it’s a pike eel. These large creatures are native to the deep waters off Australia’s east coast.
“This is the first time I have ever seen one of them in the flesh,” McGrouther said. “I suspect it was caught and discarded by fisherman who got more than they bargained for when they tried to reel it in.”
If a fisherman hooks a pike eel, the beast has a reputation for thrashing around wildly. This causes damage to fishing equipment and often makes fisherman cut their lines.
McGouther is uncertain how large the animal is because the photography could have made it appear deceptively large.
“They can grow up to 1.8 meters in length, but the angle of this photo makes it difficult to determine how large it is.”
What do you think the creature is?
