It was a simple dare. But it ended up killing 8-year-old Ki’ari Pope from Florida months later. The little girl had suffered complications since March after her cousin had challenged her to drink boiling water through a straw after they watched someone on YouTube apparently do it. Little Ki’ari did it and suffered the consequences. Meanwhile, the cousin watched on and refused to do it when it was her turn. For months. Ki’ari’s health declined. Then on Sunday night, she started having trouble breathing. Her mother’s boyfriend rushed her to the hospital, but she died there later that night.
The little girl’s mother, 22-year-old Marquisia Bonner remembers the day the girl’s cousin urged her to drink boiling water. The Boynton Beach girl needed emergency surgery on her windpipe to clear away the scar tissue caused by the social media dare.
Because the boiling water destroyed the little girl’s throat, she needed a tracheotomy, but she still had trouble breathing and talking.
The little girl’s sad death still needs to go through the process. A Boynton Beach spokesperson Stephanie Slater is still waiting for the medical examiner to determine the cause of death.
Before the dare, Ki’ari was a normal little girl who liked to play. But after going through surgery after the dare, her mother said the little girl was left deaf and suffering from chronic respiratory problems. But the girl’s mom doesn’t point the finger at Ki’ari’s cousin or the YouTube challenge.
Meanwhile, Florida Department of Children and Families wrote that the 8-year-old was “medically compromised.”
Authorities investigated the March incident along with nine other allegations of abuse and neglect involving the little girl since her birth.
“The loss of this child is truly devastating and our condolences go out to all those who loved her,” Department Secretary Mike Carroll said in a statement Wednesday. “We have opened a child death investigation to examine the circumstances surrounding her death and will deploy a Critical Incident Rapid Response Team to review all interactions this family has had with Florida’s child welfare system. We will also continue to work closely with law enforcement to support their continued efforts.”
