Life couldn’t have been going better for Jean Luc Montou and Sarah Bertrand. But May 9 marked the happiest day of their lives for one special reason. Their son Julian Charles was born into the world. He was healthy and happy and full of life. As father, Jean Luc couldn’t have been prouder. As soon as the good news was official, he was on Facebook updating the world about his new boy. But then tragedy struck and he shared another Facebook update revealing that the 29-year-old Bertrand had perished…
Jean Luc still remembers those special moments when all three were together as a family. They had just 24 hours as a unit before things suddenly took a nightmarish turn.
“Afterward, she just silently dropped tears of joy and happiness,” Montou, 24, told TODAY Parents. “She loved Julian so much.”
Less than a day after Julian Charles’s birth, Bertrand’s condition suddenly deteriorated and she died in the hospital bed before doctors could do anything to help her.
“Once the symptoms start showing, it’s already begun,” said Montou.
He remembers that she complained about a headache. Moments later, she appeared to suffer a seizure and before anyone could react with awareness, she was dead.
“I remember thinking it would be OK because we were in a hospital — and the staff tried so hard to help her — but I knew it was serious when they started doing compressions and began using the defibrillator.”
After telling the world about the birth of his son, Jean Luc had to log back onto Facebook and reveal the tragedy he had just endured.
“Sarah didn’t make it,” Montou wrote the post that earned thousands of readers. “My last 24 hours with her was the happiest I’d ever been…I loved this woman like no other and she died in front of me while I held our son. Please take a few moments to remember this woman because she was the absolute best thing that has ever happened to me and Jane.”
Although Montou has had a few days to deal with the loss, caring for a newborn and losing the boy’s mother at the same time is still a huge challenge for the young man from Louisiana to process.
“Still doesn’t even feel real. It just happened within moments and she was gone. I loved this woman so much and there was no warning. She was so happy to have little Julian. I miss her so much.”
Jean Luc had a little girl from a previous relationship, and Bertrand took the role of mother and helped raise her.
“Sarah was there for me when I was having a hard time as a single father. Sarah was there for Jane when she needed a mother figure,” remembered Montou. “Sarah did not skip a beat or hesitate to be there for us and love us from the time we met.”
What do you make of this horrible tragedy? Do you think Jean Luc and Julian will find a way to remember mom?
