Although it takes 27-year-old Aliia Nasyrova an hour to comb her hair and a day for it to dry after shampooing, she would never cut her hair for anything. The young woman, who lives in Latvia, was inspired by her favorite fairy tale heroine, Rapunzel, to grow her hair when she was just seven years old. Now, more than two decades later, she has not cut her hair and continues to care for her hair which reaches beyond her feet.
Born in Russia, Nasyrova claims that her hair alone weighs about 5 pounds, about as much as her pet cat.
And she is not the only person who loves her hair. Her husband, Ivan Balaban, has grown so used to his wife’s long hair that he considers it another “member of their family.” He always gives his wife plenty of space so she can braid her hair in bed…
While the weight of her hair causes neck pain and strain, Nasyrova wouldn’t dare cut it.
“My hair is so heavy, I would compare it to the weight of my cat,” said the 27-year-old, who was born in Samara in Russia.
Her husband needs to deal with the reality of his wife’s hair. While they’re out in public, her long hair attracts a lot of stares. Nevertheless, her husband says he would never want her to cut it off and is proud that of the hair and loves it.
“I am always cuddling up the wall [when in bed] to give more space for hair, so there is no way I can damage it accidentally, mix them up or harm it any other way,” he said. “I always talk to the braid respectfully. Sometimes I ask it to move a bit.”
Nasyrova’s hair needs are so extensive, they needed to plan their most recent vacation around them.
“When we are going away to somewhere we always plan the entire day for it since we understand that otherwise we will lose one day from our vacation and we will have to sit inside at home,” he said.
Fairy tale heroines like Rapunzel inspired Nasyrova as a child. She still remembers the first time she heard how Rapunzel’s hair was so long, she used it to help the prince climb up to save her from the witch’s castle.
“I started to grow my hair because since childhood I liked long hair very much. And I was always attracted by long hair heroines from fairy tales,” she said.
Because she doesn’t want anything to happen to her prized possession, she carefully braids her hair before leaving the house.
“Since my hair is longer than my height, sometimes I step on it at home. And outside I never go out with flowing hair,” she said.
Because her hair is unique, Nasyrova often shares pictures of it on Instagram. Her husband and she love the look, but others wish she’d cut it.
“I often receive messages from people who don’t like the length of my hair or my hair itself, but I do not react to it,” she said. “Some people write ‘cut it, sell it or get rid of it’.”
Do you think this real-life Rapunzel should cut her long hair? Or keep it as long as she can?
