In his last days in office, President Barack Obama began freeing non-violent drug offenders and releasing them onto the streets of American cities. As you can guess, this didn’t end well. And now many of these criminals are back in jail, but one in particular has made headlines. While president, Obama granted clemency to more than 1,700 prisoners. And Texas woman Carol Richardson, 49, was one of those freed from prison. She had been given a life sentence in 2006 for two counts of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, along with a conspiracy to possess along with distribute 50 grams or more of crack cocaine. In short, she was a bad drug dealer. Obama befriended her and let her back on the streets. But now she’s behind bars again.
On July 28, 2016, Obama gave Richards clemency. For the last decade of her life, she had been under constant supervision in the prison. That mean she was on her best behavior. Apparently, she had used that to influence the president to trust her on the outside.
Now, on April 13, 2017, Richards was arrested for theft in Pasadena, California. And that was only one of the ways she violated the terms of her release.
She never reported that she was arrested, had changed her address, or that she’d been fired from her job for failing to show up to work.
Attorney Mark Anthony Diaz claimed that Richards was arrested for stealing $60 worth of laundry detergent. And she had plans with that money – to buy drugs and sell them. Even though she was in jail for a decade, Richards is still addicted to crack cocaine. Now she has been assigned to mandatory drug rehabilitation.
Richards will spend 14 months in prison and then have five years of supervised release.
“This defendant was literally given a second chance to become a productive member of society and has wasted it,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Ted Imperator. “She has clearly shown a willful disregard for the law and must face the consequences for her crimes and actions.”
Richards is only one of the criminals Obama released who have returned to crime. Obama freed another lifer by the name of Robert Gill, 68. He was sent to jail for life in 1990 for distributing cocaine and heroin.
Obama pitied him and freed him in 2015.
On February 2, Gill purchased two pounds of cocaine after he met with his probation officers. A sheriff’s deputy tried to stop him, but Gill started a high-speed chase. In the end, the senior citizen crashed his car into another vehicle.
Gill later told police that “he was going to sell the cocaine to make money and would be paying a female $26,000 for the cocaine.”
Ronald Schmidt was a lawyer who helped Gill repeal his life sentence before Obama freed him said, “so disappointed to hear that he got arrested again.”
Because Gill was charged with possession and intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine, he faces 40 years in prison.
What do you think about the prisoners Obama put back on your streets?
