In a shocking video that has become a public relations nightmare for AirBnb, an host in Amsterdam was filmed pushing their guest down a flight of stairs after they failed to check out on time. Now the aggressive AirBnb host faces attempted murder charges and won’t be renting their apartment for cash anytime soon. Because the violent video emerged online, the footage is clear. In the clip, you’ll see South African filmmaker Sibahle Steve Nkumbi being pushed headfirst down a flight of stairs. This horrible incident happened after Nkumbi and three friends failed to get out of the rental on time. And the AirBnb landlord grew furious and violent.
The video is shocking. The man who rents his home on AirBnb shouts “out, out!” before throwing his tenants’ clothes and suitcases out of the rental and down the stairs.
Although he’s already tossed their belongings down the stairs, the landlord continues his violent rage. He shouts “out now!” and then pushes the female filmmaker, Nkumbi, down the steep staircase headfirst.
With the camera rolling, thousands of people on social media watched as Nkumbi hit the ground with a thud and then slams into the wall and the floor with her face. For a moment, she remains motionless while recovering from the violent outburst.
Immediately, the landlord realizes his mistake. He runs down the stairs and starts calling for someone to call an ambulance. The horror sinks in as he realizes that he has just attempted murder – although by accident.
Nkumbi who hails from South Africa is studying in Bern, Switzerland. She was renting an AirBnb in Amsterdam because she was visiting an exhibition.
After recovering from the assault, she said, “We knew that we were late and we heard a bell ring. We opened the door to this lady. She stated that this is not acceptable, you guys need to pack and leave now. And I was like, ‘Yes, give us a few minutes to pack and I apologized profusely for us being late and we were getting ready to leave.’ And that’s when she came back a few minutes later with the husband and he was banging the door.”
Nkumbi and her friends felt threatened.
“He was like open up open up open up and then she opened and this guy was extremely emotional… I asked him why he was being so emotional, we are leaving.”
The man then became “verbally abusive” and said “you need to leave now, this is not Africa.”
As she was leaving, her assailant “couldn’t resist” grabbing her.
“The way he grabbed me, I knew he was going to throw me down there. I freaked out. As I’m resisting against the wall, he’s trying to get me to his position and eventually I lost grip of the wall because it’s a wall, there’s nothing to hold on to. That’s when I flew down, all the way down. The last thing I remember was when I realized he was going to throw me down there. Flying down the stairs, I don’t remember, I passed out and woke up in hospital.”
