Few songs in popular music have had such enduring and universal appeal as Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence.” It’s melody and evocative lyrics have touched generations of music lovers, right through to today. We just found an amazing version of this song as performed by eleven year old YouTube sensation Jadyn Rylee, and you are going to be blown away when you watch her sing this beloved tune.

Eleven year old Jadyn Rylee is making waves as a YouTube singing sensation. This video clip was released on May 1, and has already been watched almost four million times.

It has connected with so many people, as Zonder Ramirez wrote “As I predicted, this will be one of your videos that will have more audience. Not so much for the subject, but for the feeling that you transmit when doing the interpretation … I am very happy to see you grow as a person and in the artistic medium. Thank you for sharing your vocation with us. Happiness, my dear little princess.”

When Paul Simon wrote “The Sound of Silence” in 1963 he had little idea that it would someday become considered one of the most important songs of a generation. In fact, when he and his partner, Art Garfunkel, first recorded it in March of 1964, it bombed so badly that the duo actually broke up. Later that year, Tom Wilson, the producer of the track, returned to the studio and remixed it without telling Simon and Garfunkel.

This time it was a smash hit. It made top ten on charts in the US, the UK, Australia, Japan, and The Netherlands.

Paul Simon spoke about being hit by the success of the song years later, saying

“I had come back to New York, and I was staying in my old room at my parents’ house. Artie was living at his parents’ house, too. I remember Artie and I were sitting there in my car one night, parked on a street in Queens, and the announcer [on the radio] said, “Number one, Simon & Garfunkel.” And Artie said to me, “That Simon & Garfunkel, they must be having a great time.” Because there we were on a street corner [in my car in] Queens, smoking a joint. We didn’t know what to do with ourselves.”

Not surprisingly, Art Garfunkel remembered the whole thing very differently, saying “We were in L.A. Our manager called us at the hotel we were staying at. We were both in the same room. We must have bunked in the same room in those days. I picked up the phone. He said, ‘Well, congratulations. Next week you will go from five to one in Billboard.’ It was fun. I remember pulling open the curtains and letting the brilliant sun come into this very red room, and then ordering room service. That was good.”

The duo got back together and quickly recorded a full length album also called “The sound of Silence,” and the rest, as they say, is history.

In 1999, BMI announced that it was the eighteenth most performed song of the 20th century, and it is one of three Simon and Garfunkel tunes to make Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the top five hundred greatest songs of all time.
