As people in southern Florida boarded up their homes and places of business and evacuated to safer places, looters waited around, lurking, eager to seize the opportunity to steal whatever they could carry. And during the storm, a group of nine looters was seen stealing from a Fort Lauderdale, Florida business. Although the rest of the state was preparing for the hurricane, and hiding from the strong winds, these criminals seized on the public fear and went out into the storm. The looters shattered the glass of the Simon’s Sportswear before jumping inside and stealing the shoes that they could. But they wanted more shoes, so they broke into a nearby Footlocker and a CashAmerica Pawn Store. However, their lawless criminality was put to a stop when the police showed up, guns drawn, and ready to put these looters behind bars – despite Hurricane Irma.
When news got out that looters were targeting the Fort Lauderdale shoe stores and pawn shop, the police department put their officers on the ground. Later the Fort Lauderdale Police Department made an announcement on Twitter that they had captured the looters and thrown them behind bars – without their brand new sneakers.
“Going to prison over a pair of sneakers is a fairly bad life choice,” police chief Rick Maglione of the Fort Lauderdale Police Department said in a statement. “Stay home and look after your loved ones and be thankfully they are all safe.”
The police tweet that went viral was shared on Sunday afternoon and read: “#FLPD Looters ARRESTED! 9 individuals were arrested looting CashAmerica Pawn & Simon’s on W Sunrise Blvd.”
More than 1,500 people liked the tweet and hundreds retweeted it.
Before Fort Lauderdale defeated the looters, the police department of nearby Pembroke Pines shared a tweet of their own:
“Any looters who come to Pembroke Pines will be greeted by our officers. Choose wisely and stay home.”
Florida is overrun with looters trying to take advantage of the chaos caused by Hurricane Irma. Even the Broward Sheriff published a tweet warning looters:
“ATTENTION LOOTERS: Every incident will be investigated. Evidence collected will be used to pursue charges after the fact. #HurricaneIrma.”
In the video below, you can see what is happening across Florida right now. Looters are seizing their opportunity to steal from legitimate business. But what goes around comes around and these criminals should beware of the consequences of their actions.

“I am Black and I do not condone this. I condemn it.”
