While shopping at a Walmart in Hayden, Idaho, a mother got shot and killed by her 2-year-old son when he reached into her purse to play with mom’s gun accidentally making it go off.
The 29-year-old was in the electronic section with several of her children. The 2-year-old was sitting in the cart when he reached into mom’s purse and fired the gun at his mother at about 10:20am.
After the incident, the Walmart was evacuated. Employees were told not to comment on the incident until authorities had done a thorough investigation.
“The store actually evacuated all the patrons out of it, nobody else was hurt which is fortunate,” Kootenai County Lt. Stu Miller said.
“This is a pretty tragic incident right now that we’re dealing with,” Miller said at a press briefing the morning of the shooting.
The shooting was deemed accidental. The Walmart store reopened the next day and issued the following statement:
“A very sad incident happened in our store in Hayden, Idaho that involved a female customer,” Walmart spokesperson Brooke Buchanan said. “We are working closely with the local sheriff’s department as they investigate what happened.”
