Was Donald Trump once a hero? A New York Daily News article from 1991 is making the rounds, in which Trump reportedly came to the rescue of a guy who was being beaten by a “big guy with a big bat.”
Seeing this, Trump then told the limo driver to pull over, with witnesses noting that “with [then-girlfriend] Marla Maples tugging at his arm to try to stop him, [Trump] leaped from his black stretch limousine Monday evening during the Manhattan assault.”
The story also includes Trump’s account of the incident, as he explained: “Someone in the car looked over and said, ‘Gee, look at that, it’s a mugging.’ I said to my driver to stop the car because it was brutal-looking. The guy with the bat looked at me, and I said, ‘Look, you’ve gotta stop this. Put down the bat.’ I guess he recognized me because he said, ‘Mr. Trump, I didn’t do anything wrong.’ I said, ‘How could you not do anything wrong when you’re whacking a guy with a bat?’ Then he ran away.”
Trump reportedly intervened after seeing the attacker give “five or six good whacks,” but the now-president’s action put a stop to it.
There were conflicting witness accounts, with one woman noting that Trump left the limo to see what had happened after the mugger had left.
Another witness provided this account: “All of a sudden, a big long limousine pulls up on an angle, and Donald Trump pops out with the blond, too. There was a guy with a bat, hitting a guy over the head, and Trump yelled, ‘Put that bat down. What are you doing?’ The guy dropped the bat, came over and started talking to him.”
Trump further told the reporter that he didn’t leave the scene until an ambulance was on the way. The victim was reportedly treated by a witness believed to be a doctor.
Interestingly, there was no police report filed about the mugging.
Trump told the reporter: “I’m not looking to play this thing up. I’m surprised you found out about it.” The interviewer further noted that “Trump was at first reluctant to discuss his daredevil deed, but then he warmed to the task.”
Of course, there was plenty of debate on social media over whether this really happened or not, with many supporting Trump, and one person noting: “Heroes do this all the time. They act spontaneously and don’t even think about the dangers. They run into burning buildings, pull people from burning cars or jump in front of students shielding them from the gunfire. I know the President is that kind of hero. MAGA.”
Others weren’t quite so sure they believed the report, however, with one person bringing up Trump’s recent claim that he would have run into a school with an active shooter: “Even if it did happen, how much younger was he, and the assailant had a bat, not an AR-15? An out of shape overweight 71 year old, charging into a building with an active shooter, big difference.”
