Nationally Sold Cheese Under Recall Due To Potentially Deadly Contamination. What To Know:

Updated March 31, 2017

When you think of cheese, you probably think about two brands. Either the processed stuff Kraft sells or the more natural cheese from Sargento Foods Inc. Unfortunately, Sargento has just recalled seven of their most popular cheese items because of a terrible problem. Their product has been potentially contaminated with listeria monocyte genes. Although no illnesses have been reported yet, the company is worried that their product could be putting people at risk…

As you know, eating food contaminated with listeria can result in a potentially deadly infection called listeriosis. And out of the estimated 1,600 people who get the infection each year, a staggering 260 die. That’s more than 10%

The Sargento recall started around February 11, 2017. Listeria poses the largest risk to pregnant women and newborn babies. But adults aged 65 years or older are also at higher risk of developing the infection.

The problem was found at the Deutsch Kase Hause, LLC facility that processes Sargento’s Longhorn Colby cheese. They found that a sample contained Listeria monocytogenes and urged Sargento to act.
