In the age of social media, it has become all too easy to lose sight of civility when it comes to online communication. Now that someone, anyone, can write a restaurant review and have it published in a forum where anyone can see it, it is even more important to be as civil as possible. We just found out about a young woman in Tennessee who left a bad review of a restaurant, and you will not believe what happened next.
Chelsea Bartley recently ate at a Memphis, Tennessee vegan restaurant and was disappointed with her experience. As so many of us do these days, she left a review of the restaurant online.
When the owners read what she had posted, they became defensive and began striking back online.
Bartley wrote on Google Plus that at one point the owners’ baby “Ran around in the nude and defecated on the floor. During my visit, a bare butt naked baby was running around, stood up on a table with its black theyre (sic) so dirty feet, and bent over to show me its butthole. An older kid came over and started like yodeling and staring at me during my meal. I was SO uncomfortable. And for my food, I can heat up a tofurky sausage just as well and in under half the time,.”
The restaurant in question, Imagine, is owned by Adam and Kristine Jeffrey, who were livid to see their restaurant and children so criticized.
The couple used their Facebook page to respond to Bartley’s allegations and to fire off a few rounds of their own.
Kristine Jeffrey wrote “I am about to start calling out names and pictures of people who leave us bad reviews, especially when it deals with our children. You will no longer be allowed to come and dine at Imagine. Especially when you lie about our babies. You’ve throughly (sic) irritated mama bear!!!” These are my children she is talking about. She’s complaining about our five-year-old coming over and talking to her, and our 21-month-old. I understand your point, but if you are uncomfortable with a naked baby then do not come to our restaurant. Periodically she will not have a diaper on and that is life.”
After the initial exchange, the public jumped into the fray as well, with many people taking offense at the Jeffrey’s response, say things like:
“Poor food coupled with butthole owners, pun intended.”- Anon.
“It’s not right for a restaurant to publicly shame a customer, especially when her comments are justified.”
“The owner needs to hire a PR person instead of insulting people who give them less than perfect reviews. Part of business ownership is that everyone will not always be pleased and ownership needs to step up and be more mature to understand that and come with a solution.”
“Chelsea I do not know you, nor will it be likely we ever meet in person, but you’re my hero and I love you for this comment. You’re amazing. Keep shining like the god damn bright ass star you are.”
