The news has been filled with controversy after controversy concerning Russian recently. American security agencies including the CIA claim that Russia hacked the presidential election in favor of Donald Trump. While many people do not know why or what this means, it is a worrying prospect to think that a foreign power is trying to sway the leadership in our country, The Land of the Free…
Now Attorney General Jess Sessions has recused himself into any investigation into Donald Trump’s campaign. This means that he cannot be involved because of a conflict of interest. That means the top law enforcement officer in the country, Sessions, while decline to participate in any investigations into Trump’s campaign.
When this was announced on Thursday, the internet flooded with searches for the definition of recuse which means, according to Merriam-Webster, “To disqualify (oneself) as judge in a particular case; broadly : to remove (oneself) from participation to avoid a conflict of interest.”
But Russia continues to be a source of controversy. Earlier, Senator Claire McCaskill (D-MO) was caught in a lie when she wrote, “I’ve been on the Armed Services Com for 10 years. No call or meeting w/Russian ambassador. Ever. Ambassadors call members of Foreign Rel Com.”
In response, one researcher found a photograph of McCaskill sitting across the table with the Russian ambassador.
Now another Democrat has made the same mistake. Whether these are out-right lies, mistruths, or “memory errors”, conservatives are calling for an investigation into these allegations.
After Jeff Sessions recused himself on Thursday, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), former Speaker of the House, demanded that Sessions resign.
“House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Friday that she’s never met with the current Russian ambassador, Sergey Kislyak. Not with this Russian ambassador, no,” Pelosi told POLITICO’s Jake Sherman and Anna Palmer during a Playbook interview, when asked whether she had ever met with the Russian envoy.”
Politico has released evidence that Pelosi did meet with Kislyak. She was also sitting at the table with the former Russian President Dmitri Medvedev, in 2010.
President Trump tweeted this photo of Pelosi with the following pronouncement: “I hereby demand a second investigation, after Schumer, of Pelosi for her close ties to Russia, and lying about it.”
Not long before, Trump referred to a photo of Senator Chuck Schumer enjoying coffee and donuts with Russian President Vladimir Putin, tweeting, “We should start an immediate investigation into @SenSchumer and his ties to Russia and Putin. A total hypocrite!”
Schumer also demanded Sessions’ resignation.
Unfortunately, Republicans cannot beat Democrats by posting photos of Dems with Russians. Many notable Republican leaders, including both Bushes, have been chummy with Putin and others.
In response, Nancy Pelosis’ spokesperson said the photo was not from a “secret” meeting:
“Leader Pelosi’s answer to the question today was clearly about private, one-on-one meetings, which she has never had with Ambassador Kislyak,“ Hammill said. ”The Ambassador was incidental to the 2010 meeting between then-Russian President Medvedev and then-Speaker Pelosi. Clearly, one needs to remind Politico that Attorney General Sessions lied under oath about a secret meeting amidst Russia’s hacking of our election, which he also didn’t disclose in a written questionnaire.”
Do you think American politicians should continue to fraternize with Russian leadership?
