Recently First Lady Melania Trump made an unexpected visit to a Lake Worth nonprofit to give a motivation speech to young girls. The organization offers girls between the ages of 12 and 17 support for domestic violence and abusive situation. So why was Melania’s visit to such an organization turned into a scandal? It didn’t have anything to do with her charitable visit and intention to provide some inspiration to the young girls. Instead, the media world is outraged because a shoe website started talking about the First Lady’s shoes.
Melania’s visit was based in kindness and an effort to help young women see a better future for themselves. As victims of domestic violence and abuse, these young women need a positive role model to guide them forward. Melania was hoping to give them some hope that no matter what occurred in the past, it does not necessarily define the future.
The unannounced stop at HomeSafe was an unexpected pleasure for the young women there. Melania presented them with Easter baskets and stuffed bunnies and a few motivational words to help them through their struggles.
“I’m here to support you and help you,” she said. “I want to encourage you, and do whatever I can to help you achieve your dreams.”
Matthew Ladika, the chief executive officer of HomeSafe was honored to welcome the First Lady to the Fort Worth location. He couldn’t express his gratitude enough:
“This is a day that the girls will never forget. It was extra special and touching … She asked them what their interests are.”
However, social media users jumped at the chance to attack Footwear News. Why? Because the foot-focused news source mentioned Melania’s shoes. The website mentioned that Melania didn’t wear her favorite Christian Louboutin pumps but instead put on a pair of Rene Caovilla sandals. These shoes retail for a meager $1,150 on Nodrstrom.com, which is cheap for Trump’s wife.
When Footwear News mentioned the shoes, social media users lashed out, growing angrier and angrier that her footwear was the focus rather than her intention to help the children.
“OK People: I did not vote for her husband. However, the lady showed up with Easter Baskets for the children,” wrote one commenter. “That is a good thing Why did you need to keep going on about her shoes? That is mean.”
“Are you people so full of hate that you have to nitpick about everything they do?” asked another. “At least she is trying to bring some happiness to some kids who have nothing… get over yourselves and appreciate that she is there…”
“You guys are really low to attack her for this,” wrote another commenter. “I’m not a huge Trump fan and you don’t have to like him or their family…that’s fine, but when she does something nice, why do you have to be jerks about it.
“If she had made sure it got out into the media you would have said she was just doing it for the press. How sad that you have to take something like this and turn it into another class war attack…”
Do you think Melania’s footwear should be headline news?
