The Las Vegas massacre has become the deadliest mass shooting in United States history. With 59 dead and more than 500 injured, this shooting will go down as a stain on American history. Because it was so easy to obtain the weapons, the killer Stephen Paddock had obtained 12 rifles that were equipped with a legal device called a bump-fire stock that allowed him to fire bullets almost as rapidly as an automatic rifle. He had 11 other firearms at the ready too. This man was not involved in ISIS. He was an angry man with a lot of guns who was deeply disturbed. This act of terrorism cannot be ignored. But during the massacre, one woman, Summer Clayburn, proved that she was a hero.
As Paddock shot bullet after bullet out of the hotel room that overlooked the country music festival, he reveled in the death and destruction he was causing along the Las Vegas strip.
He had stockpiled 23 weapons inside the Las Vegas suite. And he had thousands of rounds of ammunition at his disposal. And not only that, he had his home and car wired with explosives. This man was ready to die and take out as many people as possible with him on the way out.
As Paddock fired down on the crowd of country music loves at the Route 91 Country Music Festival, Summer and her boyfriend Michael Garcia were terrified. Although Garcia was an off-duty police officer, it was his girlfriend who came forward as the hero at the time of need.
Summer had just given birth to the couple’s first baby three months before. And during the massacre, one of Stephen’s bullets struck Michael, an officer, in the head. And with him dying from the shot, Summer put herself at risk by wrapping her body around her boyfriend to shield him. And while she protected the father of her child, Stephen shot her in the back.
Somehow Summer’s act of valor saved Michael’s life. But because health care is so expensive, they are expected to pay out of pocket for the damage they received. Michael was rushed into surgery, which turned out to be a success. He is now in stable condition and is expected to recover. Although she was shot in the back, Summer is okay.
Now Summer and Michael are raising money on GoFundMe to help pay for the health care they received.
Their fundraiser description says: “The love between those two are real and they are new parents and new parents shouldn’t be going through this. I want to raise money to help with any medical bills and general bills and necessities so they don’t have to worry.”
Summer and Michael are from Upland, California and were just in town to enjoy some country music. They gave birth to their daughter Vayda Garcia in June.
But Stephen Paddock hoped to turn the country music festival into a bloodbath as he opened fire from his 32nd floor suite at the Mandalay Bay resort hotel.
Paddock wanted to kill as many people as possible. And before the police could arrest him, Paddock committed suicide.
