When one of our armed forces comes back from a long deployment, they expect changes. You can’t be away for months at a time and expect everything to remain the same. However, one sailor got the surprise of his life when he returned from his deployment aboard a ship. He came off the ship, hugged his three children and then noticed that his wife was pregnant!
Natasha Daugherty pulled off the ultimate announcement when her sailor husband came home after his deployment to the Korean Peninsula. After discovering that she was pregnant with her fourth child, only a week after her husband, Chris left, she was primed for the perfect announcement plan.
“I found out about a week after he left. I didn’t believe it,” said Natasha. “I took the pregnancy test again and I was like, ‘Oh no way.’ I was excited about it and I emailed him and I told him to call me as soon as he gets a chance but then I thought about it for a few minutes and I was like, ‘You know, this isn’t how I want to tell him – in an email. I emailed him back and said, ‘I just miss your voice.’ That’s when I decided I’m going to document it with weekly belly pictures for him so he wouldn’t miss it.”
Six months later, Natasha had a good-sized baby bump when she greeted Chris at the dock, along with the other family members of deployed sailors. With her other three kids by her side, Natasha held up a sign in front of her belly that read “Welcome Home Baby Daddy,” and she waited until Chris was just steps away to take the sign away and reveal the big surprise.
“My heart was racing,” Natasha recalled. “I stood back and let the kids run to him. I hung back for a minute, and then he reached for me to give me a hug and then I dropped it. He just stood there in shock. He didn’t know what was going on.”
As to be expected, Chris was in such shock that he asked if her if she really was pregnant even though her seven and a half month belly was front and center.
“There were a lot of thoughts going through my mind,” he said. “The first was confusion, then I thought she was joking with me so I poked it to make sure it was real. When it was real I was extremely confused so I asked, ‘Is that real?’ to be sure, then hugged her because it was the only thing I could think to do.”
After the fact, Natasha admitted just how hard it was to keep the news a secret.
“I wanted to share the excitement and joy with him about getting a fourth baby. He definitely wasn’t expecting it,” Natasha said. “Being pregnant is such a fun experience and not being able to share it with him it was really hard. I was working the whole time and taking care of the kids so I had to push through everything.”
