When children first leave home for kindergarten, it is an emotional day. To see that little child leaving on the school bus is often a moment of both regret and joy. Parents are happy that their son or daughter is becoming so independent. But they are sad that the child is moving on so soon. But as school starts, children start coming home with homework assignments. And one of the ones this 5-year-old got has been stumping her parents. When they shared the homework assignment on the internet, most people could not even figure it out. What about you?
Because you’d assume that a kindergarten student’s homework assignment would be easy enough for parents to figure out, it’s a shock that this one is stumping everyone.
Royce Winnick from New York posted a photo of her 5-year-old daughter’s take-home assignment. The worksheet is trying to teach the girl the letter T.
The first section is easy enough. The little girl needs to trace the capital and lowercase letter T. Then she needs to write her own.
But the second section of the assignment has daughter and mom scratching their heads. The directions are simple enough: “tap out the word in the picture and write out the sounds you hear.”
Without any problem Winnick’s daughter figured out the first three answers. They were tub, ten and top.
However, the last one is stumping the internet. In the picture, there are five rabbits and no one knows what the right answer is.
“I posted the homework because we honestly could not figure out the answer,” Winnick told The Huffington Post. The mom shared a photo of the sheet on Facebook and posed the question, “Anybody know this answer to my daughter’s kindergarten homework?”
The internet came back with a number of suggestions: “twins”, “two by two”, “twabbit”, “thumpers”, and “I bet this was an error.”
Although Winnick’s daughter thought the answer was rabbit or bunny, she picked “pet” instead. Although the answer was not correct, the girl’s teacher wrote “ok” rather than making it wrong. Perhaps, even the teacher didn’t know what the correct answer was.
In the end, Winnick learned what the correct answer was: “Vet”.
“The real answer was ‘vet’ which makes no sense!” Winnick told HuffPost.
Mom admits that usually her daughter’s homework is much easier.
“But she did have another sheet similar that also had ridiculous answers,” she added.
The letter K showed four pictures. The first was a little boy with a balloon – “Kid”. The second was a first aid “kit”. But the third was a family portrait for “kin” and the fourth was a drawing of a man for “Ken.”
“The answers to the two bottoms ones are kin and Ken!” she said. “Again, how is a 5-year-old supposed to know that?”
These days kindergarten students are expected to stretch their minds and see the world in different ways. But is this worksheet and the others like it too difficult for a little child? Or should these children be challenged?
