Government programs like food stamps help millions of people get the grocery items they need to survive across America every year. If it wasn’t for supplemental programs like EBT and SNAP, some families would struggle to put nutritious food on the table. Without these benefits, they’d be forced to feed their children McDonald’s, Burger King, and anything else that is cheap to save a dime – at the expense of their children’s health.
Although these programs are designed to do good, there always seems to be a small percentage of people who try to scam the system. While most food stamp recipients are families who are working hard to provide, some others are drug addicts just hoping for a free handout. As stricter regulations, like drug screenings and work requirements, have been placed on EBT recipients, the ‘bad seeds’ keep getting weeded out so the truly deserving get the helpful benefits.
But one shopper was stunned when he found a crumpled receipt on the ground. Worried someone might have lost it, he picked it up. Then he saw a number on the bottom that shocked him…
The receipt was from a food stamp recipient who had just purchased a $38.85 bill for healthy groceries. But then the shopper saw that this woman had a remaining EBT balance of $5,583.42. This recipient had more than $5,000 taxpayer dollars to use at her own discretion on groceries.
Documented cases indicate that welfare recipients sometimes get high balances. The amount people receive depends on numerous factors including their income and the size of their household. It has been reported that some people who get government benefits gain access to as much as $10,000 to buy survival items like groceries.
“When you first told me about it, I was surprised. I’ve been involved with this for years and I had no idea why they would have balances of that size,” Joele Potts, of the Ohio Job and Family Services Directors Association, told WBNS.
While the majority of people who turn to the government for help are honest, some want to scam the system for everything they can. While thieves are out there, most food stamp recipients are very grateful for the help and put the money to good use.
“What we found in general is these are people being extremely frugal,” Potts said.
Each recipient goes through an eligibility formula. After plugging in the key factors, the system will churn through the numbers and calculate how much the recipient will receive. The government wants to only give money to people who need it, so their restrictions are watched closely.
While it is uncertain why this person had a nearly $5,600 unused EBT food balance, many people who saw it grew jealous and outraged, sharing their thoughts on OpposingViews.com.
