If Steven Alexander’s wife had a second name it would be the “Angry Splash Mountain Lady.” If you’re not familiar with this nickname, it came after a photo of her was taken at Disney World last year. The woman was sitting in a seat all alone and was caught being visibly upset. While the other riders were excited, Alexander’s wife sat, staring down the camera with her arms crossed. He shared the image with the caption “I wouldn’t go on Splash Mountain with my wife” and it went viral.
Although viewers loved it, his wife was angry that he didn’t go on the ride with her. But the image was shared as part of a Love What Matters post where he unloaded all the health issues the couple has struggled with over the last decade.
When he first met his wife Jordan in 2006, Steven Alexander had been suffering from a failed kidney transplant and dialysis. Although he was sick, she stayed by his side and they eventually married…
Disney World was Jordan’s favorite place to visit. But Steven’s illness prevented them from ever going. After his second transplant in 2011, Steven’s condition stabilized. And it was finally time for the Syracuse, New York couple to plan their trip.
But Jordan’s favorite ride, Splash Mountain, was closed…
Steven promised they would one day ride Splash Mountain together. But then life got in the way. Their first child was born.
Nevertheless, they made their way to Disney World when their boy was old enough. And Splash Mountain was open. But Steven’s health was too run down for him to ride.
He told Jordan to ride it alone, but she was angry that her husband failed to keep the promise.
And when she got off the ride, she showed Steven the picture and said, “I did this for you!”
They broke out in laughter. And at that moment, he knew he had married the right woman. Her sense of humor suited him perfectly. He wrote:
“The ability to make each other laugh, even in the difficult times, has been the glue of our relationship — I don’t think I would have survived without her in my life. She carried me when I was at my weakest, and believed in me when others told her not to get tied down to someone so sick.”
A few months later, “Visit Orlando – the tourism board of Orlando – flew us down so I could finally ride with her,” Steven and Jordan made their third trip to Disney World. Splash Mountain was open, and Steven was able to ride!
This time they did it together, and Jordan had a smile on her face for the photo.
“The truth is, I’d ride into anything or climb any mountain with and for her,” he wrote.
While the world had seen the “silly” photo of his angry wife, he knew it served a purpose only he could understand.
“[…]I see the funny, smart, intelligent and beautiful woman who carried me through life, and I love her more than anything.”
They went to Disney World for the fourth time in January. And this time Jordan couldn’t ride. But for a great reason. She was pregnant and almost due!
