Teen Walked Out Of The Ocean With Blood Dripping From His Legs, Doctor Admits Scary Diagnosis

Updated August 11, 2017

When 16-year-old Sam Kanizay went for an evening swim at a Melbourne, Australia beach, his pleasurable evening quickly turned into a living hell. The mystery flesh eating bugs left Sam with open wounds on his legs that leaked blood. The teen had been soaking in the water after a soccer game. But when he walked out of the beach water, blood was dripping from his legs. His feet were also covered in blood. Doctors could not explain the mysterious injuries. They thought it might be some kind of flesh eating critter but couldn’t identify it. That’s when Sam’s dad came up with an ingenious idea to get down to the graphic truth.

When his father Jacob saw his son’s open wounds and blood pouring from his skin, he knew he needed to figure out what happened to him. The doctors didn’t have the answer.

Later, Jacob brought a slab of meat and a fishing net back to the same Melbourne beach. He put the meat into the net and lowered in into the water. What did he get? Jacob captured hundreds of the flesh eating bugs that he thinks were responsible for his son’s inexplicable injuries.

“I caught some bugs overnight over in the bay. I’ve put meat into a net and they’ve grabbed on to that like no tomorrow,” Jacob Kanizay told Daily Mail Australia. “We’ve brought them home and they’ve just attached themselves to this meat. They’ve sucked the life out of it – all the blood. They’re mite type creatures. One would assume these are the bugs that have grabbed on to him in their thousands.”

Because he is confident that these bugs were the things that hurt his son, he brought a sample to the hospital so the research team there could conduct tests. He wants them to determine what species they are.

“What is really clear is these little things really love meat,” he said of a video. You can watch the clip below and see the bugs devouring the raw meat with ferocity.

Michael Brown, a marine expert, doesn’t know what they are but thinks they could be “jellyfish larvae.”

“I’ve been doing this for coming on 20 years now and I’ve never seen anything like this,” he told Channel Seven’s Sunrise program.

While the teenager was soaking his feet in the surf, he felt tingling on his skin. But he thought it was just from playing soccer earlier that day.

“My first instinct was that I must have stepped on a rock,” he told Fairfax Media. “But I realized that couldn’t have been it, because it was evenly distributed over my whole ankle and foot.”

Jacob was terrified when he saw his son’s feet. He couldn’t stop the bleeding so he rushed the boy to the hospital.

“As soon as we wiped them (his legs) down, they kept bleeding,” he said. There was a massive pool of blood on the floor (at the hospital).”
