One Oklahoma family is counting its blessings after a freak accident nearly demolished their home. Luckily the family escaped the incident without injury, but now they have to pick up the pieces and move on.
As Tulsa Oklahoma’s Fox 23 News reports, an area family narrowly escaped disaster and injury when a one hundred and twenty pound tire came crashing through their home. You are not going to believe their story.
Jim Crews of Tulsa, Oklahoma was walking from his garage towards his house one evening after work recently when he heard a thunderous noise coming from inside. He says “As I got to the door, I just heard this loud bang and stuff flying everywhere, and I thought there was a wreck on the highway.”
As he started to run towards his home, he saw the cause of the destruction. Laying in his yard was a one hundred and twenty pound semi tire. And nearby was a giant hole in the side of his house.
His wife had been inside the house at the moment of impact, but had been in another room, thus avoiding injury when the bullet-like tire ripped through the house.
Crews had installed security cameras around his house and had captured the exact moment of impact. In the video, shared with Fox 23 news, a tire belonging to a semi tractor trailer is seen flying through the air like a projectile, before smashing through his family room wall and exiting into the back yard. In CSI lingo, a “through and through.” It appears to have originated from nearby highway 412.
Police are trying to ascertain which trucking company might be responsible for the accident, but have not yet determined who was involved.
Meanwhile Crews and his family are simply happy that neither they nor their pet dogs were harmed during the freak accident. The next order of business for him is working with his insurance company to get the repairs taken care of as quickly as possible so they can get on with their life.
“They’re supposed to come out tomorrow and take a look to evaluate it,” Crews told reporters shortly after the accident occurred.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, about 20 percent of motor vehicle crash deaths result from a vehicle leaving the roadway and hitting a fixed object alongside the road. Trees, utility poles, and traffic barriers are the most common objects struck. About half of the deaths in fixed object crashes occur at night. There are remarkably few numbers available for accidents involving homes, as it is such a statistical improbable occurrence.
Earlier this year, a semi tractor trailer veered off highway 10 in El Paso texas and crashed into a building, where it remained for several days until firefighters could assess the structural integrity of the building and whether or not they could safely remove the vehicle.
