Last week, a New Zealand mother gave birth to one of the biggest babies ever born in the country. While he was huge, he was healthy and happy. Weighing in at 16lbs 4oz or 7.39 kilograms, this boy also measured a total of 57cm long or 22.44 inches.
This child is twice as heavy and more than 6 cm longer than an average child born in nearby Australia. That means this boy, fresh out of the womb, will be wearing clothes meant for children already 6 months of age.

Based on the ultrasound pictures, doctors predicted his weight was going to be about 14 pounds. But as mom struggled to move and could not even bend down during the last stage of the pregnancy, doctors wondered if they had underestimated.
On delivery day, they quickly learned they had been completely wrong about this little one’s gigantic size.
Delivered via a C-section at Wellington Hospital on Monday, this boy made it difficult for mom in the final hours. Doctors spent a whopping 3 hours trying and failing to administer the epidural. Mom was so relieved when it finally came in.
The baby boy’s parents are shocked that their child is so big. They had no idea he would come in an extra large size. They have asked not to be identified.
“We are not that tall ourselves, so we are not sure where his size comes from,” the father told Stuff.co.nz.
But this large b oy is not the first big kid in the family. The mother’s firstborn was 11.8 lbs at birth.
While friends and family are already predicting that he will excel at sports, mom and dad are pushing the newborn toward a different career.
“People are calling him the next Jonah Lomu,”the father said, referencing the All Black rugby player, “But we think he’ll be a concert pianist.”
While this newborn might be huge, he doesn’t even come close to the Guinness World Record. The 138-year-old record is still held by the son of Canadian giantess Anna Bates. When her baby boy was born, he weighed 23lbs and 9 oz and measured 76.2cm long. That child was born in 1879 but did not live for very long.
Readers on Daily Mail had a lot to say about this huge newborn boy. Here are some comments:
“Lovely babies. My son was 8 pounds 2.5 ounces at birth and I didn’t gain a pound during pregnancy. Sometimes big babies just happen! And it’s lovely because my son is so healthy and strong,” shared a reader from Essex.
“I was 13lbs 7oz at birth. Born at home to a slim mother without diabetes. I’m a size 8.. Sometimes these things happen! Ouch!” shared a reader.
“I bet mum is walking a bit funny.”
