The story of Rapunzel is one as old as time, and pretty much everyone knows about the girl locked in the tower, golden hair long enough to reach the ground. But few people know that Rapunzel isn’t just a fairy tale – it’s playing out right in front of our eyes in the form of one special family in Illinois. And they’ll stop at nothing until the world recognizes their hair.
Tere Lynn Svetlecich Russell is a 43-year-old mother of five, with three daughters. Together they are known as the real life Rapunzels of Illinois, all because of their incredibly long hair that flows almost to the floor. Turns out if you never cut your hair, it can get very long.
What is even more shocking is that the Russells are not the only Rapunzels in the world. We recently told Natasha’s story and showed her hair. Check her out as well! Scroll down to learn more about the real Rapunzel family from Illinois.
Tere Lynn has had her long, eccentric hair ever since she was just a toddler, eventually growing it out over the years to it’s current length of 74 inches. Her three daughters have also grown out their hair, clearly inspired by their confident and attractive mother. And they are eager to follow in their mother’s footsteps and have hair as long as the matriarch some day.
Her eldest daughter Lynn’s hair is 36.75 inches, Cendalyn’s is 36 inches and her youngest daughter Chesney’s hair is shorter but still quite long at 26.25 inches. According to the family, each of the Russell women uses a quarter bottle of hair conditioner each time they shower!
“The daughters shampoo their hair in the shower and I will stand there with a handheld sprayer,” Tere Lynn says, describing quite the unusual morning ritual.
Apparently, Tere Lynn often gets her hair stuck in car doors, sucked up while vacuuming or stepped on by a random passerby. Despite the obvious setbacks, it’s all worth it for the winners of the “Longest Ponytail Competition!”
After that incredible experience, it was time for the girls to take their first trip to the salon.
Barcroft TV picked up their story and shared the video you’ll find below. In the description, they write: “Mum Tere Lynn Svetlecich Russell, 43, and her daughters have a combined hair length of over FOUR METRES – like a family of real life Rapunzels. The mother-of-five has had flowing locks since she was a toddler and still has it today because it drives husband Chip, 47, wild. Amazingly, she is forced to wash it by kneeling every time because it DRAGS her to the floor when wet. But most of the time her tresses are winning her acclaim across Illinois state where she regularly scoops first place in ‘Longest Pony Tail Competitions’ at annual fetes and fairs – and now her girls are following in her footsteps.”
