Today Show Anchor’s On-Air Response To Matt Lauer’s Firing Causes Major Controversy

Updated November 29, 2017

“I’m heartbroken for Matt, who is my dear dear friend and partner, and is loved by many many people here. I’m heartbroken for the brave colleague who came forward to tell her story, and any other women who have their own stories to tell. We are grappling with a dilemma that so many people have had to face these past two weeks. How do you reconcile your love for someone with the revelation that they have behaved badly?”

That was Savannah Guthrie, announcing to the world that the man who sat next to her on the Today Show set for years, was terminated for an allegation of sexual misconduct.

Some people Savannah was too accommodating to her good friend, who was just charged with a revolting crime. Others feel she should have walked off the set in solidarity for Matt.

The news has come out and shocked fans of the Today Show, who have watched Matt from their living rooms for decades. NBC announced that Matt Lauer was terminated just 36 hours after one formal complaint was filed against him. However, NBC also stated that they have reason to believe this is not an isolated incident, which may justify them terminating him so abruptly.

Matt Lauer has worked in the television industry since 1979, after he dropped out from the Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University. His long career highlights include filling in for Tom Brokaw on NBC Nightly News, but he will be forever associated with his role on the Today Show.

NBC News Chairman Andy Lack released the following statement to employees of NBC:

On Monday night, we received a detailed complaint from a colleague about inappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace by Matt Lauer. It represented, after serious review, a clear violation of our company’s standards. As a result, we’ve decided to terminate his employment. While it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over twenty years he’s been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.

Our highest priority is to create a workplace environment where everyone feels safe and protected, and to ensure that any actions that run counter to our core values are met with consequences, no matter who the offender.

We are deeply saddened by this turn of events. But we will face it together as a news organization – and do it in as transparent a manner as we can. To that end, Noah and I will be meeting with as many of you as possible throughout the day today to answer your questions.
