Get ready to feel some major things because this story about a touching moment at a wedding was emotional for the bride for a very unique reason.
On Becky’s big day, there was a noticeable absence – her son, Triston, had passed away, and while he couldn’t be there, she reserved a seat for him among the guests. But that wasn’t the only way her son was part of the ceremony.
Becky’s husband-to-be, Kelly Turney, planned a very special surprise for the day. When Triston died, his heart was donated and another man who needed it to survive was the deserving recipient. Kelly arranged for the man, Jacob Kilby, to come to the wedding, which was unknown to Becky.
She had never met Jacob, but Kelly reached out to him and asked him to be a groomsman in their wedding.
Becky began her walk down the aisle when Kelly stopped the ceremony and introduced her to Jacob.
The photographer for the event noted on the Love What Matters Facebook page: “I knew about this surprise, but nothing prepares you for the beauty of this moment.”
She added, “I met a man named Jacob Kilby yesterday who is alive because of a heart transplant received from this bride’s son Triston. Her son couldn’t be here for the wedding day but Becky’s groom Kelly Turney, surprised her by flying Jacob up to Alaska to stand in as a groomsman, carrying Triston’s heart. Kelly stopped the ceremony to introduce Jacob to Becky for the first time.”
The photographer said of the emotional moment: “Everyone was so moved by this and I had to share this amazing story. I had the pleasure of hearing Jacob share his gratitude and plans for a heart healthy life to Triston’s sister before the ceremony. I am so blown away by his story and his amazing outlook on life. You couldn’t ask for a better recipient to receive such a gift.”
The story, understandably, moved many people, who added their thoughts to the Facebook post, such as one person who wrote: “I love stories like this…It gives me Hope that one day, I’ll get to meet his recipient and hear my son’s Heart beat again…as well as meet the other 3 men that received his other organs!!”
Another person who was at the wedding added: “There are no words to express truly how amazing this was to witness! Not a dry eye anywhere! The other special moment was the dance the bride and Jacob shared together.”
A family member shared this touching note: “This is my nephew Triston Taylor ‘Shorty’ Green, the son of Becky and Kelly Turney. We were blessed with 19 years on this earth with him. He is a hero. He is a warrior. He gave the ultimate gift of life to Jacob and four other strangers when he left us. I loved him fiercely and will continue to do so into the hereafter.
Be like Shorty. Please consider organ donation and inform your families of your decision. #donatelife.”
