More often than ever before, drivers are turning to dashboard cameras to capture their interactions on the road. For a safe or defensive driver, these devices are smart. Not only do they help verify the truth in an insurance claim if an accident occurs, they often catch the shocking close encounters drivers face every day. Take this clip for instance. Joe Strauss, the truck driver, was speeding along an Ohio road when an oblivious driver pulls out in front of his 40-ton truck at a crossroads. Watch this clip and see how this miss could easily have been a devastating tragedy. This clip is a reminder to always look in both directions when driving.
Although the clip is only twelve seconds long, it is enough to remind us to be more careful while on the road. Often our lives are on the line when we drive. Our flesh and bone human bodies do not stand a chance against the thousands of pounds of metal that surround us like a cage. And when those cages are moving at 60, 70 or 80 miles per hour, one wrong move can be the end of us.
In the clip here, you’ll see Strauss’s truck approaching an intersection. Meanwhile, a black car is seen appearing from the left.
Because Strauss understands how to drive, he thinks the person will stop at the stop sign at the corner. Instead, the vehicle shoots straight out in front of his 80,000-pound truck and tries to shave a few seconds off her commute. But at great risk. The reckless Ohio driver misses the truck by inches. If the truck had smashed into the car the driver of the small car probably would not have survived.
Strauss shared the footage on his Facebook page at the beginning of June. It quickly attracted thousands of views. He also shared the following caption:
“This person did not stop or even slow down, they literally came inches from the front bumper of my 80,000 truck at 55mph. I saw them and started to slow, you can tell by the video a few seconds either way and the outcome could have been terrible.
“It does not matter if it is my fault or not, If this driver would have died, or possibly me, I (or my family) have to live with the outcome. This is the exact reason I spent a lot of money on a dash cam.”
Facebook users chimed in to show Strauss support.
“So glad you saw them and slowed down that fraction of an inch. You are one Lucky Man!” wrote one viewer.
Another shared: “So glad your safe. The outcome of that could have been devastating.”
A concerned citizen also wrote, “Wow, just goes to show you how some people should not be driving, and this is why it’s good that the truck had a dash cam so if there were an accident he would have proof that it wasn’t his fault.”
