Waitress Sees They Left A $600 Tip, Then She Starts Feeling Sick To Her Stomach

Updated June 15, 2017

If you’ve ever worked as a waiter or waitress, you know what a hard job it is. It takes mental energy to get the right food to the right people in the right order, and it takes physical stamina to stay on your feet for six or eight hours straight carrying large trays of food back and forth from the kitchen. In addition, it sometimes takes an enormous amount of patience to deal with rude customers, screaming children, and ungodly messes left behind with little more than a buck or two for your service. But one waitress at a Waffle House in Tennessee says that a tip left for her by a recent patron made her “sick.” Read on to find out what could have caused this.

Lauren Ball is a waitress at a Waffle House in Tennessee. She spends her days serving up syrupy sustenance with a smile. Lauren works very hard to put food on her own table at home, and after giving her two year old son a birthday party, she found herself broke. And just at the same time that she had planned to visit Florida with her father.

Lauren decided that in an attempt to make enough money to pay for the long awaited vacation, she would take an extra shift at the Waffle House. On this particular night, she expected to make about thirty dollars in tips, but her hope was to turn on the charm and work as hard as possible in order to make sixty dollars. That would allow her to pay for her trip and spend some much needed time bonding with her father.

As the evening progressed, Lauren waited on a table of men who were there to hang out together, chat, and take it easy. She brought them their food, and even talked with them for awhile about Harry Potter. When Lauren stepped outside for a cigarette break, that’s when one of the men left the table and came outside to talk to her.

The man from the table told her that one of his friends inside planned to leave her a big tip. She thought the man was joking, and she laughed. But he persisted. He told her that he wouldn’t be surprised if she took home two hundred or three hundred dollars that night. Much more than she had even hoped for. But she couldn’t get her hopes up. They all seemed like nice men, but they didn’t look like they could spare a couple of hundred dollars just for breakfast food and conversation.

When Lauren returned to the diner, she found the credit card slip at the men’s table and was shocked to see what they had written on it. Lauren had been left a six hundred dollar tip. She couldn’t believe her eyes. The cook at the restaurant came out and asked the men if it was for real, and they said that yes, it was indeed.

“It took my breath away,” Lauren said. “It made me sick to my stomach, but in a good way.”

With tears in her eyes, she hugged and thanked the man who had been so generous. “I told him he was an angel,” she said.
