Doctors often get criticized for making too much money, but when you really see what they have to go through for some of their patients, that money is well-deserved.
In one recent case, a doctor had to conduct a procedure that would cause most people to get a bit queasy. When one woman went to Dr. Michael Lewis complaining about a monster-sized abscess in her armpit, the situation turned nasty fast and you can witness the entire procedure in the footage that has emerged.
It starts out with Lewis using a scalpel t o make an incision in her right armpit. He informs the anonymous woman that she shouldn’t feel any pain but the sight alone is enough to make you cringe. As soon as the skin is punctured runny red liquid comes oozing out and Lewis moves fast to collect it in a bag.
As the woman lets out a sigh of relief, the Woodland Hills, California doctor says…”It doesn’t smell very good.”
And then he gets to the bottom of it when he uses surgical scissors to puncture another area. This is when he realized that it is a fat abscess. At this point, the woman is most certainly in pain and she lets it known as she shakes and bangs her limbs on the table as the doctor attempts to inject more anesthetic into the affected area.
As he is working on her, Dr. Lewis explains what he is doing and says, “We need to get all the pus out., in order to get better abscesses need draining.”
The majority of skin abscesses start when bacteria gets into a small wound such as the root of a hair or blocked oil or sweat gland.
The clip, which is three-minutes of the gut wrenching procedure shows all the gory details. Lewis ends up getting the job done which is to remove all the pus in order to prevent further infection.
We are lucky that there are doctors who not only have the skills to perform such procedures but also don’t mind doing it. Clearly, Dr. Lewis earned his paycheck with this one.
“I have always enjoyed performing procedures-it’s one of my favorite things to do,” said Lewis, who admitted that he does not feel queasy when he carries out procedures like this one. “I perform multiple procedures weekly from simple things like cleaning out ear wax and joint injections to the removal of masses on the skin. Nothing bothers me too much as far as procedures go, however, if the smell is bad it can be really tough.”
In order to prevent a skin abscess like this woman’s, be sure to do the following on a regular basis…
-Wash hands regularly
-Use separate towels from other family members
-Do not bathe with other family members
If you do have unfortunate luck and end up with a skin abscess, make sure the area gets fully treated and heals before you use shared equipment, such as machines at the gym, saunas or swimming pools.
And whatever you do, don’t squeeze the pus out yourself as this could spread the bacteria to other areas of your skin.
