Our eyes often play tricks on us. Perhaps, you think you see something move out of the corner of your eye or maybe a mirage in the desert tricks you into seeing something that doesn’t exist. If so, it’s not your fault. Our eyes are hardwired into our brains and take shortcuts to provide information to us at lightning fast speed. When we’re growing as babies, our eyes start to recognize patterns. These patterns become part of our experience. This speeds up how fast we can recognize that which is around us. But it also can trip us up. That’s how most optical illusions work.
These optical illusions play tricks on our brains. Because our eyes view the world in a certain, predictable way, the creators of the illusions know how to fool our minds. The patterns we recognize are so ingrained in our experience, that even if we know something is an optical illusion, it can be hard for us to un-see it.
In the image below, you’re confronted with a simple challenge. You need to look among the sandstone boulders and spot the little girl waving at the camera. It might sound like an easy challenge, but it is not. Only if you have perfect vision will you be able to spot the little girl.
But let me tell you, I have 20/20 vision and still struggled to find the waving child. Besides good vision, you need to be patient with the image. Check it over from top to bottom, left to right. You’ll have a better chance of finding the little girl waving at the camera if you scour the image for a few minutes. Don’t give up right after you get going.
Nevertheless, this is a challenging visual test. So, let me give you a hint…
HINT: Consider the fact that these boulders are not meager rocks. They are massive and the image you are viewing is like a small mountain. Many of the large boulders you see are bigger than a house and certainly multiple times bigger than any human. With that in mind, you will have a better chance of spotting the waving girl. But it will still be tough.
HINT NUMBER 2: You cannot see the little girl’s entire body. And she is a small child. She is probably pre-school or kindergarten age. She is only visible from her waist up. And she is waving with both hands. Not that you know you won’t see her entire figure and that the scale of the image is deceptive, take another hard look at the collection of boulders.
HINT NUMBER 3: Her tiny form is in the center left part of the image. Focus your gaze around that area and do not click ‘flip’ on the image until you truly cannot find her.
And remember, if your vision is not 20/20 you probably will struggle with this quiz.
ANSWER: Click “flip” on the image below to see the waving girl. She’s been there all along!
