Whether you are a shopper or not, malls can be a fun place to spend a few hours. On a cold winter day or when it is raining, malls attract a lot of people. Perhaps you like to mingle in crowds of shoppers and feel the festive spirit all around you. Or maybe you’re a people-watcher and like to grab a hot cup of tea and sit at one of the tables in the food court and watch the world buzz about.
As the holiday season approaches, malls become even busier and crowded. Families take their children to sit on Santa Claus’ lap and tell him what they want for Christmas. They go to JC Penny to have their family portraits taken. People also like to grab deals in stores and try all the free samples. Some people just like to grab a burger or a plate of orange chicken and sit down in the food court and “chill.”
That’s why people were shocked when a surprise show appeared before them while munching their food at Ontario’s Seaway Mall near Niagara Falls.
Shoppers in the video below are too busy with their food and their conversation to notice something happening. But when a young woman with a cell phone stands up and starts singing, people start turning their heads to witness the miracle unfolding before them.
The young woman lets the words from the Hallelujah Chorus from Handel’s Messiah spill out of her mouth into the Canadian mall’s food court. People nearby are confused and a little frightened. Why is she singing? They wonder. But they don’t have a clue. Soon though a trend starts to emerge. Other singers stand up from the crowd and start singing. One by one, a group of people join the tune and sing the classic Christmas song for the people in the mall’s food court.
Little did shoppers know but they were being subjected to a Christmas flash mob. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
By the time all the hidden singers have exposed themselves, more than one hundred voices are joined together in the chorus. Shoppers have already taken out their phones to capture the miraculous moment.
As it turns out, the singers are part of Chorus Niagara. They’re professionals who were hired to spread holiday cheer around the mall. And as you can see from the video, people were thrilled to watch it happen near them.
Little did the people in the mall know but these singers rehearsed for weeks to make sure it was all a surprise until it happened. The last thing they wanted was for the shoppers to realize there was a singing Christmas flash mob about to materialize before them.
The mall helped the group hide among the crowd. And when the video was uploaded it soon got more than 50,000,000 views. That’s a whole lot of eyeballs watching this Christmas miracle happen in Canada.
Eventually, the local paper tracked down the woman with the cell phone who started the whole thing. She gave an interview with Welland Tribune, saying that one family near her was particularly thrilled.
“They had these two little kids with big eyes, and one of them said, ‘mom, this is so cool.’ I just loved it. I loved that we really seemed to lift people’s spirits like that.”
