Atlanta billionaire and founder of Home Depot, Bernie Marcus, has come forward to proclaim his undying support for President Trump’s re-election campaign in 2020. Marcus won big from the corporate tax cut that passed at the end of 2017. And because he has earned millions of dollars from the tax break, he can afford to donate about $2 billion of his wealth to more than 300 nonprofit organizations across the globe that support people in need.
In addition, Marcus wants to donate the majority of his accumulated wealth to charity before he dies. He will give to all sorts of philanthropic causes as well as giving the state of Georgia a 250,000 square foot aquarium to rival the best in the world. Marcus’s aquarium would be built in midtown Atlanta.
But the aquarium is just a drop in the bucket of the wealth that Marcus, 90, has amassed during his life. He also wants to offer funds to an autistic center in his home state of Georgia. He’s donated millions to a trauma center and a stroke and neuroscience center at Grady Health System. Although he has given a lot of money to charities, Marcus wants to give more. He has amassed so much wealth because of the tax cuts in recent years that he has more than he knows what to do with – so he is giving it away to people in need.
Like billionaires Bill Gates and Warren Buffet, Marcus plans to donate the majority of his wealth to people in need. During an interview with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, he described his high hopes of giving away billions of dollars to good organizations who can make a difference in the world.
“Every day of my life, there are new challenges for me that I want to get involved with,” he said.
Because he is 90, Marcus knows that he will not live forever. If he fails to give away most of his money before he dies, he declared that he will give away 80 to 90 percent of his remaining wealth to the Marcus Foundation, which will then spread it out across the world to people and causes in need.
“I want to live to be 100 because I want to be in a position to give it away to those things that I really believe in,” Marcus explained.
Bernie Marcus has an estimated net worth of about $5.1 billion. He was the co-founder of Home Depot and served on the corporation’s Chairman of the Board until he retired in 2002.
He added, “I’ve got all the houses I need. I live very well. My kids are taken care of. Everything I live for now is finding the right things to put my money into, and that can give me a rate of return in emotion and doing good things for this world.”
Meanwhile, the president of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, Alicia Philipp commended Bernie Marcus for his philanthropic donations.
She said, “What Bernie has done, and what he plans to do in his lifetime, will not only bring incredibly significant impact on those nonprofit institutions today but will also continue to benefit those organizations for generations to come.”
He also revealed his plans to shove a lot of money into Trump’s reelection.
“[Trump’s] got a businessman’s common sense approach to most things. Now, do I agree with every move that he makes? No, I don’t. But the truth is he has produced more than anybody else. He has. If we look at this country, I would say that we are better off today than we were eight years ago or six years ago,” he reportedly said.
