As the COVID-19 pandemic erases all the economic gains that happened during the Trump presidency, the economy looks about as bad as it did during the final Bush years. Just like the Great Recession that ruined a generation’s economic hopes in the late 2000s, the first year of the 2020s seems marred with the economic recession that seems likely to come because of the American government’s inept response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Not only did the White House called the coronavirus a hoax – only weeks before it started killing baby boomers by the hundreds – but Republicans and Democrats seem intent on making every decision around economic relief for Americans a partisan issue. While Democrats want to give workers a check and extra paid sick time, Republicans want to bail out the massive corporations that recently spent billions buying back shares of their own stocks.
However, few politicians have been able to stand apart from the rest amid the COVID-19 pandemic like freshman Democrat Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. She has even managed to outshine President Trump in her response to the global pandemic – although she is getting a lot of resistance to her ideas and proposals.
On Sunday, Ocasio-Cortez appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” to discuss her controversial proposal to give Americans a much-needed economic stimulus. She told the CNN host Jake Tapper that she was “very supportive” of the plan proposed by the Democrat-led House Financial Services Committee, which would give every American $2,000 along with $1,000 per child.
“When you’re able to stop the money going out, then that money that you do give goes a much longer way,” she said.
However, Ocasio-Cortez did not feel so good about giving the checks to high-income people. Because these individuals have not been sustained much economic damage due to COVID-19 as they continue to work from home during the outbreak, she questioned why they’d get a check that would hardly do anything for them when people in need like working-class Americans need it more.
“One of the things that we’re saying is tax it back a year from now so you don’t have to worry about a big, complicated, bureaucratic means test upfront. Mail them all out to everybody, and let’s get it back from the folks who don’t need it next year,” she added.
Ocasio-Cortez wants to send you a check worth $2,000 plus an additional $1,000 for every child. Now, if you’re as rich as Bill Gates or Warren Buffett, then you’ll end up giving that $2,000 back to the government in your taxes next year. If you need the cash like most average Americans do right now, you’ll spend the money on something essential – or maybe even go out and splurge on something you’ve always wanted.
While getting a check from the government sounds really good to most Americans during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is an outrage to many to accept handouts like this when times are not as tough.
What do you think about the government giving you a $2,000 check? Would you take that money from this young Democrat?
