In a shocking incident on the Northwest Side of Chicago, an 81-year-old pizza delivery man, Ernie Aimone, fell victim to a brazen carjacking after being assaulted and robbed. Aimone, who has faithfully served the community for 40 years, found himself in a terrifying situation after making a delivery in the Jefferson Park neighborhood.

The attack unfolded swiftly as Aimone was approached from behind by an assailant. Without warning, he was struck in the head, causing him to collapse to the ground. Amidst the confusion, the attacker demanded Aimone’s car keys, escalating the violence by punching him in the face. Aimone, a retired Army veteran who had served in Vietnam, recounted the harrowing experience, expressing his fear for his life as the assailants fled in his car.

The assault took place around 9 pm on North Ludlam Avenue, leaving Aimone shaken and injured. While Aimone’s car, a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe, was later recovered by state police, it had suffered significant damage in a crash. Despite this, Aimone’s resilience shines through as he remains determined to return to work once he secures another vehicle.

Aimone’s dedication to his job at Joe’s on Higgins has made him a beloved figure in the community, cherished by both coworkers and customers alike. Frank Demonte, speaking on behalf of Joe’s, described Aimone as family, highlighting the deep bonds forged over the years of service. Despite the trauma of the attack, Aimone’s commitment to his family and livelihood remains unwavering.

However, Aimone faces challenges in rebuilding his life post-incident. His insurance company has refused to cover the cost of a new car, leaving him without means of transportation for his job. In response to this setback, the Gladstone Park Chamber of Commerce launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist Aimone in purchasing a new vehicle. The campaign has garnered overwhelming support from the community, with donations pouring in to help Aimone regain his independence and livelihood.

Dan Ciolino, representing the Chamber, emphasized Aimone’s status as a local legend, noting his decades of service to Joe’s and his country. The outpouring of support for Aimone reflects the profound impact he has had on the community, rallying together in solidarity during his time of need.

As Aimone continues to recover from the ordeal, the resilience and spirit of this dedicated pizza delivery man serve as a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Despite the trauma he has endured, Aimone’s determination to overcome challenges and return to his job is a testament to his unwavering resolve and the support of his community.
