It has been decades since Jimmy Carter was president, and a lot has changed during that time. However, Jimmy Carter, although getting up in years, still has a sharp mind and a piercing intellect. But recently, he has put that razor-blade of thought toward the current sitting President, whom he argues is not a legitimate president for a very specific reason, which he has explained at length.
In the years since the 2016 election, it has become quite clear that Russia influenced the outcome of the election in favor of Donald Trump. Many of the people in charge of the Trump campaign have been locked away in jail for crimes committed during Trump’s run for president. These are circumstances that no one likes to hear but are true. And while it is unproven whether Trump himself accepted help from Putin and his regime, Trump did say that he would gladly accept any “dirty” a foreign power has on his political opponent, which is a worrying thing to hear a President say concerning our democracy.
Jimmy Carter served as President from 1977 to 1981. During an interview with historian Jon Meacham, the former President said that he believes a “full investigation” is needed and would show that Trump only rose to power because a foreign government, Russia, interfered with the 2016 election in his favor. Carter made this claim while at a conference on human rights at the Carter Center in Leesburg, Virginia.
According to reporter Susan Page, Carter told the historian: “(A full investigation) would show that Trump didn’t actually win the election in 2016… He was put into office because the Russians interfered.”
That’s when the historian followed up with Carter to find out if the former President believed that the Russian push to get him into office made him an illegitimate President, Carter said yes it does. “Based on what I said, which I can’t retract.”
The facts are clear concerning the 2016 election, and they show that Russia did, in fact, interfere with the election. That means a foreign country hacked into our voting system and changed the result. The system was not rigged from within. It was hacked by a foreign government. That is a worrying prospect for all Americans, who wish to be part of a powerful country that can protect its own citizens from a foreign country’s influence.
“There’s no doubt that the Russians did interfere in the election,” Carter said. “And I think the interference, although not yet quantified if fully investigated, would show that Trump didn’t actually win the election in 2016. He lost the election, and he was put into office because the Russians interfered on his behalf.”
Although Carter said these statements days after Trump made the wise decision not to go to war with Iran over a mechanical drone, Carter did not see how this had anything to do with the president’s election via Russian interference.
“I agree with President Trump on his decision not to take military action against Iran,” Carter said. “I had a lot of problems with Iran when I was in office.”
