Sometimes illness strikes quickly. In the case of the son of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, his 43-year-old son Nicholas “Nick” Lloyd Webber, it happened much faster than anyone thought possible. Less than a week ago, the famed Broadway composer announced that he would need to cancel his appearance on the opening night of his new Broadway show Bad Cinderella because his son was having a medical emergency as he was being hospitalized for a bout of stomach cancer.

Not long after announcing that he was stepping away from his Broadway show opening, Webber confessed that his 43-year-old son was “critically ill” with stomach cancer and was not doing well at all. His Broadway show would have to take a second seat to his family, who needed him right now as the young man was in critical condition and needed to be surrounded by loved ones in his time of need.

On March 23, 2023, Webber shared some bad news on the opening night of Bad Cinderella. He shared on Instagram that he wanted his fans and followers to send their “outpouring of support for my son Nick” as the 43-year-old had been moved into hospice care following his battle with stomach cancer. The famous composer added, “I think he’s over the worst of this first bout of pneumonia he’s got as a result of his cancer, which is just ghastly.”

While Webber wished his newest show “Bad Cinderella” a great opening night, he and his family would all be “gathered around” Nick to pray over him and wish him better as he passed on from this world following his battle with deadly stomach cancer. Webber added, “I’m absolutely gutted not to be able to be there, but my place is really here in England at the moment.”

At the end of the touching Instagram video, Webber also thanked Ukrainians, who are in the middle of a horrific war with Putin and Russia, for sending him a “Cats” t-shirt because they are performing the iconic musical. He said, “They’ve been performing ‘Cats’ there in a bunker and just a makeshift production.” He added that it touched his heart the most to know that the Ukrainians would also be sharing their heartfelt love and “thoughtful about dearest Nick.”

Only a few days later, Webber’s world would shatter to pieces. Nick was only forty-three years old when he passed away on March 25, 2023. Webber made the sad announcement to the public that his son had lost his battle with stomach cancer.

Webber shared a statement that said, “I am shattered to have to announce that my beloved elder son Nick died a few hours ago in Basingstoke Hospital,” Andrew, 75, said in a statement shared with PEOPLE Saturday. “His whole family is gathered together, and we are all totally bereft.”

“Thank you for all your thoughts during this difficult time,” the iconic composer added.

Nick Webber was a composer and record producer.
