Her Twin Babies Were Born With Drugs In Their System And Died Days After Birth

When most babies are born into the world, their parents have such high hopes for them. But when these twin baby girls were born with drugs in their system. Because of their mother’s carelessness, while pregnant, the babies died just two days after they were born. Now the state has decided to charge the mother of the twins with their murder.

Because the babies came into the world prematurely, it was soon discovered that the babies had cocaine in their system. Since the children were born and died just two days later, the mother was found to be the cause of their death. Having abused drugs while pregnant left the twins in a vulnerable state. That’s why authorities charged her not with just their murder but with child abuse as well.

The mother who is being held responsible for the death of her twins is from Chattanooga, and her name is Tiffany Marie Roberts. Because her twins died a horrible drug-related death while in the hospital, Hamilton County Criminal Court records show that police arrested her on first-degree murder charges, aggravated child abuse, and viable fetus as a victim.

Besides the alleged cocaine abuse, Roberts also tested positive for ecstasy in her system and admitted she used the drug on the day she gave birth to the twins.

Throughout her pregnancy, Roberts maintained her doctor visits. During those visits, she tested positive for drugs three separate times and refused to change her habits. The drugs that were identified in her system throughout the pregnancy included: cocaine, oxycodone, Roxicodone, methamphetamine, and benzodiazepine.

Both newborn twins tested positive for drugs, just like their mother had multiple times during the pregnancy.

During the weekend before delivery, Roberts saw her doctor and complained about feeling shortness of breath. She told the doctor that she had taken ecstasy. She was prepared for an emergency to delivery and gave birth to the fetuses early when she was just 23 weeks along.

Although Roberts shared photos of her premature baby girls on Facebook and expressed optimism in the caption, fate was against her.

“Bless thee, beautiful babies. Girls came early, but they gonna be strong.”

The official cause of death of the newborns was pulmonary hemorrhage, which was related to the fact that their bloodstreams had been pumped full of drugs.

The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology writes, that babies born at 23 weeks “should be considered potentially viable.” About 25 percent of those infants survive when undergoing intensive NICU treatments. But since Roberts’s babies were premature and fighting the drugs forced into their systems, they had an unfair disadvantage.

Roberts is currently sitting behind bars in the Hamilton County Jail where her bond was set at $1 million. Since she was arrested, a woman thought to be the murder suspect’s sister, shared a Facebook comment defending Roberts.

“You have no idea what she has been through, and I promise its more than you could ever fathom. Yes, she has a drug problem. Yes, she needs help. God knows her heart, and that’s all that matters. She didn’t intentionally kill the girls she has had a serious problem since grade school, and she has lived in the streets her whole life and even her childhood. It’s all she knows.”
