History was made when the 41st President of the United States George H.W. Bush passed away. The Republican president and father of the 43rd president George W. Bush was 94-years-old when he passed away on November 30, 2018. Although the passing of the president affected many Americans, it made the biggest impact on the lives of the people in his family.
Although the 41st president’s sons were greatly affected by the tragedy, his grandchildren were as well. And Jenna Bush Hager came forward to read a letter that she wrote about her grandfather’s passing on the Today show.
Besides the heartfelt letter, which is included below, Jenna, 37, and her children Mila and Poppy all shared a post on Instagram to show their love and adoration for the Bush patriarch who has since passed on.
Jenna Bush Hager’s “love letter” to her grandfather was a touching tribute. She called him “Gampy” and gave a pre-recorded video to the Today show so she could share her love for her grandfather with the nation.
“My grandfather wrote letters all his life, to his children, his wife, friends, and even political rivals. He often wrote about love and family. For me, his words have always been a precious gift. All the more so now. It’s my turn to write a love letter to my Gampy.”
From there the Today show aired clips of Jenna and her family sharing happy memories with the former president.
In the clip, former president George W. Bush said, “He showed you and me how to love, he showed you and me the importance of humility.”
George W.’s wife, Laura, honored her father-in-law’s spirit by saying, “He thought it was very amusing to make people laugh and to come out in some sort of goofy hat. He loved that. He loved being funny. A lot of the special times were around the dinner table, the laughs around the table, and that is certainly how he grew up, with everybody at the table and everyone talking and everyone laughing during those meals, they were so much fun.”
Jenna’s twin sister Barbara, named for her grandmother, spoke about how her Gampy always made everyone happy.
“I’m sure that every one of his grandchildren thinks he loves them the most. He just always makes every person feel so special.”
Because the family was always so important to George H.W. Bush, Jenna wanted hers to honor him because of his passing.
“He was blessed with six children, 17 grandchildren, and great-grandchildren too. Whatever demands were placed on him in his professional life, and there were many, we all knew we could count on him.”
During his presidency from 1989 to 1993, Bush presided over the end of the Cold War. He also served as a hero in World War II. He also played an instrumental role in the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Although he served just one term before Bill Clinton unseated him, Bush played a vital role in the progress of the United States as a world power.
