Michelle Obama has recently made headlines when she voiced her opinions about the lack of diversity in politics. While at the Pennsylvania Conference for Women on Tuesday, Obama made her feelings clear on why people don’t trust politics. She recognized the lack of diversity while she was at the State of the Union address and noticed that all white men were on the Republican side of the room.
“We should be working actively to mix it up, so we’re getting a real broad range of perspectives on every issue. Shoot, I would see that in Congress,” said Obama. “At the State of the Union address … when you are in the room what you can see is this real dichotomy. It’s a feeling of color almost. On one side of the room is literally gray and white. Literally, that is the color palette on one side of the room. On the other side of the room, there are yellows and blues and whites and greens. Physically, there’s a difference in color, in the tone, because on one side all men, all white, on the other side some woman, some people of color.”
She shared her concerns with the struggle in America and made it clear that she feels that these things aren’t recognized and they are right in front of us.
“I look at that, and I go, no wonder. No wonder we struggle, no wonder people don’t trust politics. We’re not even noticing what these rooms look like,” she said. “If people haven’t had the experience of being other and out, and you are trying to fix the problem of those folks, it’s hard to come up with the right answer when you haven’t lived it.”
As to be expected there was a whole range of opinions on Obama’s theory and the ongoing war between the political parties was very evident in the comments…
“If a Republican said this in reverse, it would be non-stop on MSNBC, CNN, ABC, NBC, and CBS. Their heads would explode.”
Some called her out for being the one who is racist…
“Hey Michelle, why make it about the color of someones skin? Why is it the country doesn’t trust your husband or Hillary? Actions speak louder than skin color… And your remarks seem both sexist and racist.”
“If “it’s hard to come up with the right answer when you haven’t lived it,” and she doesn’t believe white people can represent non-white people then, according to HER reasoning here, how can non-white people represent white people?”
“And it is nothing about the color of your skin—it’s the attitude that counts and Moochelle and Obammy for them it was nothing but skin color. I’m doubly sorry that Obammy was ever allowed to serve as our President—he was a total disgrace to the United States as history will tell.”
And some called her out for her own lifestyle…
“How many white citizens are privileged enough to spend $100 million on family vacations in 8 years?”
There were few who sided with Obama on her statements
