Just hours after Andrea Torralba, 20, gave birth to her newborn son, she turned to her boyfriend, the father of the child, and whispered murderous instructions in his ear. Her boyfriend, 21-year-old David Villa, nodded in agreement, and then the two new parents went after the newborn baby, strangling the infant until it was left unresponsive and dead in the hospital.
The reason that Torralba and Villa killed their son was that they agreed after he was born, that they didn’t want to have a baby. The young couple from Oxnard, California, arose suspicion in the hospital staff who found the newborn unresponsive and affected with serious injuries.
The murder occurred just hours after the boy was delivered into the world. And now both parents have been arrested on felony assault on a child by means of force resulting in the child’s death. They could face years behind bars all because they didn’t want a baby.
Police officers arrived at the hospital room after staff alerted them about the unresponsive baby. The infant was said to be in critical condition and suffering from suspicious injuries. Although the medical team got right to work trying to revive the baby, the parents had injured the newborn so severely that there was no hope of getting it to continue living. But that’s exactly what the parents wanted.
It did not take the police long to get a confession from the parents. Torralba and Villa confessed that they murdered the newborn, strangling him until he fell unconscious. The couple then told detectives that they killed the baby because they didn’t want him – but because abortion was not socially acceptable where they came from, they had to kill the child instead.
After their arrest, bail was set at $1 million for each parent. If the parents are convicted of the crime, they could spend 25 years to life in jail for killing the newborn baby in the way they did.
The Oxnard Police Department is asking people to help in the investigation. They want more details about the crime and about what happened to the little boy.
They wrote on their website: “This is an on-going investigation. Anyone with information regarding this case or other criminal activity is encouraged to contact Detective Juan Morales at (805) 385-3922, or online via the Oxnard Police Department’s website.”
These young parents must have been overwhelmed when they realized just how much effort it was to take care of a baby. However, they could have put the boy up for adoption or found another way to deal with life as parents rather than strangling the little one to death in the hospital room hours after he was born.
Because California has a Safe Haven law, the parents could have told the nurse that they did not want the baby, then they could have left it. The child would have been put up for adoption and gone into the foster care system. Anything would have been better than killing it like this.
