Mom Is Sick Of School Not Doing Anything To Students Abusing Her Daughter, Takes Action

When a parent finds out that his or her child is being bullied, they feel that they would do anything to protect their babies. This instinct can inspire parents to stand up for their kids in myriad ways, including taking legal action, starting awareness movements, and lobbying for legislation.

One mother of a bullied teen took a much different approach to dealing with her child’s bullies. One that has landed her in jail. Read on to hear how this miffed mom took out revenge on the school bullies and how those actions backfired on her.

Thirty-three year old Joanne Higgs attacked two young teenage girls who had been bullying her daughter and has been found guilty of assault in a court of law. Higgs defended her actions, stating that she is “not a thug.”

Higgs reportedly chased, pushed, and punched thirteen year old Lilly Hulse and fifteen year old Dominique Nash. The impetus for this attack was a rumor that Hulse and Nash had bullied Higgs’s daughter, Demi Knox, with the help of other students. The group of bullies allegedly threw eggs at Higgs’s house.

“These kids were taunting me in the street, they were hanging round my house. There were shouting abuse at me and my daughter,” Higgs told the Manchester Evening News.

“I had tried to call the police to tell them about it,” she added.

After a dispute between Knox and this group of teens on the school playground, Higgs took matters into her own hands. She said that she knows the assault was wrong, but she was frustrated that the school hadn’t done its part to remedy the situation, and that the bullying had become so severe that she had to remove her daughter from school.

“I know what I did was wrong but I’m not a thug or a chav [sic],” she said. “I acted on how I was feeling at that time. I don’t think I am the victim – it’s my daughter who has been the victim in all this. She’s had a nightmare.”

Higgs was handed a guilty verdict and given a fifteen week suspended sentence for assaulting the teens. Additionally, she was ordered to compensate the victims.

“I want to put all this behind me,” Higgs said. “All I want is peace my daughter and my family. Demi has had no happy years at school.”

Middleton Technology School, issued a response regarding Higgs’s previous claims that staff didn’t intervene as much as they could have.

“I hope that Miss Higgs is not trying to deflect the responsibility for her actions by seeming to blame the school,” Middelton teacher Allison Crompton said. “I strongly refute Miss Higgs’s comments. As an adult, Miss Higgs made her own choices about her appalling behavior. The school was dismayed and disgusted that our students were attacked in this way by an adult.”
