A woman’s 12-year-old daughter became a hero in the delivery room and had a unique experience that most preteens will never have. When her mom, Dede Carraway, went into labor, the OB-GYN made a surprising suggestion — asking the girl to step in and help with her baby brother’s delivery. Jacee didn’t just help in a small way but had a front-row seat at the baby’s birth.
Jacee explained to WS News Now that she was worried she wouldn’t see her brother’s arrival because there were so many people crowding around her mother. Jacee noted: “I started crying because I thought I wasn’t going to get to see him be born, because I was too short.”
Dr. Wolf had an interesting suggestion and offered Jacee the experience of a lifetime, asking if she wanted to help deliver the baby.
Jacee and her mom agreed and the girl was placed in front of the doctor. She shared: “I actually delivered him, he let me actually push down and pull the baby out… I was like, wow, like I’ve played fake doctor before, but this is the real thing, this is the real deal. I was really nervous.”
Dede suffered some pain during the delivery because the epidural wasn’t working, but her daughter’s reaction to helping with the baby’s arrival eased her discomfort.
Jacee helped the doctor when it was time for her mom to push and delivered her newborn brother, 7-pound, 6-ounce Cayson Carraway.
Dede explained how touching the moment was, noting: “Seeing the emotions on her face, it made me cry. I’m about to cry now! It was just a good moment for me.”
Among the many people who left comments on social media about the girl delivering her brother was one person who noted: “Although some of you may not agree with her helping deliver her baby brother, this beautiful moment will always be remembered by both her mother and herself. If you don’t like the post just keep scrolling, no need to comment and speak negative. Birth is a natural process and there is absolutely nothing wrong with allowing her daughter to witness this beautiful moment. It’s not for everyone but Jacee was a rockstar and helped deliver a newborn! I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t have when I was 12!”
Others weighed in with how special this moment was for the family, with one commenter noting: “What a wonderful honor to be able to not only see your baby brother being born but to help deliver him… what a wonderful loving kind and caring big sister he has.”
Another commenter shared their own experience with labor and deliveries, explaining: “As a former paramedic who has assisted with seven deliveries, this beautiful experience is something that she will never forget.”
Still another person relayed how a similar experience lead them to a related career, explaining: “I was my mom’s Lamaze coach at 12 and was right there next to her during the delivery of my brother. One of the best experiences of my life. I’m now an obstetrical ultrasound sonographer.”
