Netflix is known for bringing on original programming in the last few years. And now it’s official: the Obamas have gone Hollywood. Barack and Michelle Obama have formally announced a multi-year deal with Netflix to produce content on a variety of topics. They are looking to create a “diverse mix of content” including television series, feature films and documentaries. These projects will be available across the world and could prove to be a big hit or a disappointment for the massive streaming media empire.
“One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” Obama said in a statement on the deal. “That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix.”
While the specifics of the deal are still up in the air, it appears that both parties couldn’t be more excited about making the deal. Ted Sarandos is Netflix’s chief content officer and said in a statement that Netflix was, “incredibly proud,” to bring the Obamas into the fold. He also described them as, “among the world’s most respected and highly-recognized public figures.”
Many have commented on these news stories, asking whether Obama plans to use the platform to attack President Donald Trump. But Obama has refuted those claims and made sure to tell the public that he has no plans for anything like that.
“We hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between people and help them share their stories with the entire world,” he said.
Michelle is going to be very involved as well, and the two will make a great team for accomplishing their goals. She was also involved in the statement revealing their new deal, much to the happiness of her many fans across the globe.
“Netflix’s unparalleled service is a natural fit for the kinds of stories we want to share, and we look forward to starting this exciting new partnership,” she added.
The Obamas clearly have some important stories to tell, and this venture with Netflix will provide them the platform that they need to really take their mission to the next level.
In addition to this big Netflix deal, the Obamas also cashed in on a $65 million book deal with Penguin Random House. They will be writing separate memoirs and covering the successes and failures of Obama’s time in office.
They have formed Higher Ground Productions to create this range of content, and Netflix subscribers can look forward to a unique perspective from a former president for years to come. Obama himself will be both on and off camera, depending on the type of project and his own busy schedule.
Netflix has not shared the financial details of the deal, but the media giant has been shelling out tens of millions of dollars to other high-profile celebrities for their own Netflix deals. We can assume that the Obamas will be compensated very well for their new deal!
