Not Many People Noticed What George Bush Did To Michelle Obama At His Dad’s Funeral

Over the last week, the United States has suffered a tragedy. The forty-first president of the United States, George H.W. Bush passed away on November 30, 2018. The country quickly united across party lines to mourn the loss of the former president and celebrate his legacy, which included presiding over the breakup of the Soviet Union and ushering in a new era after the end of the Cold War.

During George H.W. Bush’s funeral service, all eyes were on his family. But one person people were watching very closely was the forty-third president and his son George W. Bush. Not only did they share a first and last name, but George W. Bush also followed in his father’s footsteps and went on to become the president as well. Not many sons can follow their father’s led that well!

Although most media cameras were focused on people giving speeches and tears flowing from their eyes, one camera zoomed in on George W. Bush during a lull in the ceremony in the Washington National Cathedral on Wednesday.

Before the funeral started, George W. Bush greeted his presidential predecessors and successors who all sat in the front row. But then George W. Bush did something that no one expected. He slipped something into former First Lady Michelle Obama’s hand. What was it? It was a candy.

This was not the first time George W. Bush has shared candy with Michelle Obama. He was captured on camera doing the same thing back during Senator John McCain’s funeral in September.

Because Bush and Michelle Obama are usually seated next to each other at these presidential events, they have established a tongue-in-cheek relationship. Although Bush was grieving during his father’s funeral, he found it in his heart to bring a burst of joy to Michelle Obama by giving her that candy.

As the Obamas realized that Bush had given Michelle candy, they smiled at each other. Bush then proceeded to greet the Clintons and then the Carters further down the line.

Last month, Michelle Obama revealed her close friendship with George W. Bush. Because him giving her the candy at McCain’s funeral was caught on camera, the media wanted to know all they could about it.

She said, “I didn’t realize at the time that anybody noticed what we were doing. He is my partner in crime at every major thing where all the formers gather. So we’re together all the time, and I love him to death. He’s a wonderful man. He’s a funny man. It was a simple gesture. He was getting a cough drop from Laura. They were old cough drops. They were in a White House box.”

Michelle Obama believes that the reason the moment went viral was that people in America are “hungry” for “unity” between political parties. Although Bush was just sharing a candy, it was an example of how kindness should not be limited to recipients who share your political party affiliation.

Did you notice this moment during the funeral? What do you think about Bush’s sweet personality?
