You recognize the sound, the low growl, and when you do, your instincts tell you to beware. And it is a good thing your instincts tell you that. A low growl indicates that your dog (or a strange dog for that matter), is scared and anxious. Fearful dogs can do unexpected things, so take the low growl as the warning that it is intended to be.

Whether your dog or another dog is performing the low growl, give them space and don’t make any sudden moves. A surprise is the last thing you should do at this moment.

Because the dog is nervous or anxious, keep a wide breadth and let the dog calm down on her own. Soothing sounds and words can help too.

My dog always looked funny when it did the next behavior, that’s why I was surprised to learn it meant anything but.
