Without a doubt, police officers have one of the toughest jobs out there. Not only do they have to deal with violent and otherwise dangerous people, but they also have to respond to tragic scenes that devastate families and communities. In Colombia, one mother, 32, had gotten to her wit’s ends because debt collectors kept hounding her and demanding immediate payment from her.
Things were so bad for this young mother, she saw no hope for a future with her beloved son, 10. That’s why this mother decided to do something that could not be taken back. She climbed onto the railing of a bridge and, holding her son tightly to her chest, she jumped to their deaths in a horrific murder-suicide that shook the community and the country of Colombia.
Because debt collectors refused to let Jessy Paola Moreno Cruz rest, she was driven mad to the point of taking her own life, as well as her son’s, by jumping from the La Variante Bridge.
Before she jumped, emergency responders, including local police, arrived at the scene. From there, they begged the young mother not to jump to her death with her 10-year-old son May Ceballos. The boy also begged his mother not to go through with it because he did not want to die.
However, the debt collectors had ruined Cruz’s life. They had hounded her for repayment and even evicted her from her home. That pressure caused Cruz to feel like she had no future. At least no future that she wanted her beloved son to experience.
Because she felt there was no way forward and no turning back, she jumped from the 330-foot high bridge and killed herself and her son.
Police officers at the scene wept as they watched the young mother jump from the bridge in the city of Tolima.
Video footage caught at the scene shows the police officers and other first responders pleading with the young mother, begging her not to jump from the bridge. However, she could not be convinced. The video is being withheld because it is extremely upsetting.
In a statement released to the public, firefighter Rafel Rico said: “They begged her not to do it and tried to convince her to stop. But sadly, she took the fatal decision.”
After Cruz went through with the murder-suicide in front of the police, officers collapsed to their knees and started sobbing. The event was so disturbing, and they were so close to helping her down from the ledge. But they just could not do it in time to save Cruz and her 10-year-old son.
Mayor Guillermo Alfonso Jaramillo of Ibague said: “This ends up hurting or even costing the life of the person. This lady, who was a single mother, unfortunately, was desperate at the pressure of (paying back) debts.”
From her social media profiles, it would have been impossible to tell she was struggling. One image posted in August showed Cruz with her son along with the mood caption, “Feeling fantastic.”
Debt turned her life into a living nightmare.
